any comments in general etc.

my comments and ideas for the next book:

1. less repetitive computer generated art. i think everytime i went to make art for the book i froze up and thus the art was semi stiff ala not wholly varied. i broke many of my own rules like not sketching ideas out, being very rigid etc.

2. also for the next one id like to make at least to different 2 page spreads of every theme. so instead of, say just one 2 page fantasy spread graphic, ill have two so they change every other page and look a bit more varied. do it with the scifi and history pages also.

3. IMO the history graphics were okay but i didnt like the border. it could have been cleaner.

4. also id like to for fun have a really cool piece of art preceding each category (scifi fantasy hist) with a full textual header reading - Fantasy Miniatures. i think it would seperate the book a bit more instead of categories just running into eachother with no distinctive boundry. i tried to keep the pages together ala scifi is with scifi but its not always possible. pending the idea etc and my art level it may work. i have a cool idea for it.

5. more varied non category page graphics aka for index, manufacturers, dedication etc maybe have different graphics? i dont know what though.....

6. the cover will be different in the way that i will sketch it out 1st instead of just \"doing it\" on computer which is much more painfull and also it will be more flowing aka you wont see the same stuff on the right that you do on the left etc in duplicate form. i currently have ideas for the next 3 covers.

7. i tried full color background behind the minis but no matter what color i chose none of them seemed to work as well as white. next time though the category art will be more fun and varied and also it will fade up higher onto the page instead of just cutting off at a certain border. i think this will add more colors to the white pages without using a full solid color background which just didnt look good in tests.

8. the book could be bettered with some ideas ive covered and others ill be keeing to myself for surprise. i think i did good as the biggest print thing i had ever done before this was a couple page B&W pamphlet or a 2 color folder with inserts for a compay describing what they do. i think its good in the way that i did not put through anything i didnt like. not to mention cherns editing kept the cover from looking like crap and kept all the art inline. and next year i promise it wont be late as i know the exact sizes and hidden sizes and requirements.

9. i was thinking it would be nice to add soft drop shadows to all the minis boxes thier in. i just dont have that filter for quark so i dont know. it would add some small depth to the pages though although i think the new header art with dual variations and non repetive looser graphics will work wonders for the pages.

10. the tutorials were cool, id like to see actually a full tutorial book that would be hardback less thick but with more pages. i think it would be wild to have a killer series of them covering everything. thats a whhole different deal though. may be too crazy.

11. you comments (here). good layout, art, minis represented fairly, good quality, good price, more pages, added materials/categories, what do yah all think?

all i can say is: great photoshop work, man.
haven\'t seen the book yet, only the layouts that were shown here and your desktops, but these rock. deepest respect. you do the kind of stuiff in PS i would love to be able to do.

btw.: would it possible to provide these desktop themes in 1280*1024, too? *grins*

Your desires are orders, sir!

OK, first Euroopean customer to speak here: I received it today. Simply put, I cannot find any faults on Chern and Wightzombie\'s accounts. Well, yes, a few typos here and there... Nothing else at all: the book is simply superb; well bound, will last forever, excellent quality paper... The foreword put me in a reflective mood and made me think where we have got ourselves into... This Internet thingie we take for granted nowadays, was simply unthinkable a few years ago! Having the book in your hands makes you feel part of something grand, of a global effort of sorts, even if, like me, one only (for the moment!) takes part by posting in this forums (and buying the book, of course!!!).

Now, the contents: obviously I had seen most examples, but it\'s been nice to (fondly) recall some of them, and as some people said, putting some namens to faces... bar that, to nicks!

If anything, there are a couple of pics that are a bit blurred or below average quality. I\'d prefer a clear picture that perhaps does not capture all the glory of a mini rather than another one that is partially blurry. I know it may be a lot to ask, since even the photo jobs are made by the authors, but there it is nevertheless.

Other than that, a beautiful book, very well worth of its price. I hope you make enough of a profit to guarantee new editions: being featured in the annual will soon be an aim in itself round here! lol

Annual is Awesome!!

Awesome.
I got mine last night.
I sat in bed with it last night with my wife and looked it for over an hour. She is now inspired to try painting.
I have made several books, and used to run a large graphics studio. This book is an incredible bargain. I cannot believe you managed to make this high quality of a book and still kept the price so low. The pages are thick and opaque, the photo work is great. Superb photoshop clipping. Well done on all production aspects. I like the design both interior and exterior.

In all honesty, I would rather get a shot in this book than win a golden demon.

I got mine two days ago. Here are my opinions.

Picture quality was great for some, good for most, and left something to be desired for a few pictures. Those few simply were either not high enough resolution, or crisp enough. Not every mini painter is a professional photographer so this is understandable (I\'m one to speak), but some editional effort could be made to improve these pictures, or simply exclude them out of the book for the sake of a higher quality product. The majority (I\'d say 85%) are great pictures which leaves little to complain about for quality.

Page quality of the book is as would be expected from an art book, well worth the money spent on it. My only gripe was it\'s a bit tall and won\'t fit on my narrower book shelves, but that\'s more of a personal problem.

The articles are good, especially the face painting article, for those who haven\'t seen it before. It\'s great reference material, but for the next annual, I can only hope for more such articles, I\'d look for mostly intermediate and advanced articles. There are after all a plethora of beginner articles all over the web, that don\'t need duplication.

The book is going to be a great resource for me. When I want to paint a white cloak, I can now sit down and flip through to find a white cloak I like, examine it, and go from there. Or if I want to do NMM on a curved blade, I simply flip through till I see one, and use it as a reference. I will rename it the Cheater Painter\'s Handbook (nothing wrong with cheating right?). One other area where it\'s a great inspiration, is that if I want to try some simple freehand, I can again browse till I find something I like.

It is many times more convenient than browsing through thousands of web pages to look for something, and sure beats print outs (which I have resorted to in the past).

Thank you CMoN for putting this together. I will definitely get in line for the next one.

Maybe some day we will be able to walk into a commercial bookstore, and be able to browse through a miniature painting art book.

A few things on my wish list for the next annual:
1. Year the miniature was painted.
2. Painter\'s comments
3. More tutorials
4. Recognition of CMoN contest top 3.
5. Short bios for 3-5 top painters.

Critique...

First of all, I love the feel of the book. The layout is great, and it really has a classy look.

I would definately like to see painters comments.

I agree the photo quality was lacking on some of the pics.

The tutorials were great, but on Haley\'s and Wong\'s there was an awful lot of wasted \"white space\"

More tutorials.

:flip:I got mine Monday, (San Diego) still going through it with lot’s of ooohs and ahhhhs, the camera work is amazing, it’s going to be a great reference source and a fountainhead of envy because I’m no where near the quality of the painters in it. In fact the only thing I found that I’d like changed is the white lettering on that chestnut brown..we with old eyes, have a time reading it without squinting.:(

argggghhhhh! im taking a frickin contract out on the delivery man! thats okay, theres plenty of trees to hide in, he\'ll get his cummupence.......;)

for the book, sorry bout some of the blurry pics, i really tried to get everyone in, next year ill wear a axe for my hand and cut em off at the pass.

1. Year the miniature was painted. - possible. one of the problems with this is many painters dont care or forget so you would have some with and some without. it may frustrate some to have a inconsistent feature but i think its possible maybe right after the mini name.

2. Painter\'s comments - we thought about this earlier, but the problem was, with the 1st poll, everyone wanted LOTS of pictures. a painters comment means one less picture or a smaller picture and what did people want \"bigger pics than the 1 inch minis in some GW books. so whenever possible i kept the minis bigger. 20 or 30 comments in the book means that much less art. however it would make the book a bit nicer and one way to do it would be to max the page count to 150 if possible. but if the book stays the same size you could kiss alot of minis goodbye or say hello to smaller txt and crowded pages.

3. More tutorials - that would be cool but again the main feature is the books art so any more tutorials would kill pages of entries and minis. the only way around this is a tutorial specific set of books, cool but costly in investment or again more pages aka round 150 for plenty of mini\'s and a couple more tutorials and mini comments. and again cherns emphasis on the book was promoting the art, not how a mini is painted per say.

4. Recognition of CMoN contest top 3. - yah, that may be kinda cool, explaining the contest then having the winners maybe with the top winner commenting, have it all on one page. it would be like any other page but with its own graphics. after all, we gotta fill out that small index.

5. Short bios for 3-5 top painters. - nah. i think chern is into promoting the hobby, not getting to know you better in a book. it can be done too easily online at any of thier personal minis sites. also i think were into promoting the hobby as a whole, not making celebs.

6. The tutorials were great, but on Haley\'s and Wong\'s there was an awful lot of wasted \"white space\" - that was due to us deciding we didnt want a tutorial to be half started on one page and half finished on the quarter top of another then for one to start below that etc. i tried to fill the space but given content it was between making the txt hella huge or just leaving it be. i think if we had time to get more pictures or bigger pictures and stuff like that it may have filled up nicer. but..... hmmmmmm...... i just didnt know how to fill up that space.

Got mine today!! It\'s quite lovely. Great selection of pieces and a very nice presentation.

Only question, how come some painters got name and screenname and some only got name?

jim

Getting

If the *ahem* \"North American\" distribution-center is sold out.
And I didn\'t receive an email.
Then...
I can only assume that we Canadians get ours shipped out of the ones that come off the boat Oct 1st?

Has some catastrophic geological event occurred, that separated Canada from the rest of North America?

Maybe the news ought to read \"US distribution point\"???

Sorry, just getting impatient and frustrated. And very jealous of everyone that has it already.

Peace!

Nope, everyone who ordered the book before the announcement went up was shipped theirs. So it\'s probably your Canadian postmen :)

we got some with the minis, the others we figured out, and any ones we didnt figure out, that was that. we had peoples real names generally so we might have been able to ask on cmon for peoples nicks and maybe someone would have known.

this year was very different in both the way we recieved pictures months apart or more, so email was split up and really only half way through did we start asking for additional info. so the 2004 annual will be a lot smoother for what to look for, request, and how much we need.

Oh....
