CMON Painting guide

For thosae of you who are interested, I thought I\'d stick up an update.

To date theree are 222 articles up on CMON. Of these we\'ve received permission to include 107.

Of the 107 that we have permission for, I\'ve captured 66.

Basically that means that I have 66 articles which are ready to be edited and then compiled in a logical fashion.

I still haven\'t figured out how to group the articles, but I was thinking along the lines of the following categories.

Brushes and tools
Techniques
Bases
Model Step by Step
Terrain
Sculpting

In each of these the articles will then be further classified under either skill level or another suitable category like lava bases or Games workshop models. (details)

And I know how to spell \'definitely\' correctly.

You might want to separate techniques into two categories... beginner and advanced... I mean, sure you probably have them sorted in that order, but I\'m just offering a suggestion.

Funny guy

You don\'t need to spell to edit, you just copy and paste it into any word proc program and let the proggie find the errors. A good one spots grammatical mistakes as well as spelling and punctuation.

What are you still using a typwriter and an Abacus? ???

I also use Micrsoft Publisher, which allows you to do a lot of nifty things like wrapping words around pictures, and would be perfect for laying out a printable booklet.

Great. I\'ll probably take the weekend to sort out some final issues and start distributing things on Monday.

What will probably be the best way to go about it is to distribute sections to the people that want to help (i.e. you guys) in that way, even if the whole book isn\'t in the same style, at least each section should be.

please, if you have any ideas on this let me know.

I make my living as an editor for a newswire service; the vast majority of my job is comprised of correcting the spelling, grammar and punctuation of corporate press releases from a wide variety of clients -- including Fortune 500, billion-dollar-market-cap megacorps who have huge PR departments, staffed with people who are paid large sums of money specifically to write such releases, and therefore should know how to do so properly. Coming from this experience, may I please state just how very, very wrong the above statement is?

If I had a quarter for every conversation with a client in which I pointed out the half-dozen or more corrections that were needed and received a response of: \"Wow, but I wrote it in Word with the spelling and grammar check on,\" well then, let\'s just say I\'d be able to retire and spent a great deal more time painting my minis!

Until that day comes when I can stop utilizing my editorial skills, however, I may as well put them to better use and volunteer to do some editing for this project as well.

Draw up a style sheet or grid in InDesign and distribute that, along with the articles.
Try brainstorming a few possible ideas for layouts and look at similar books magazines. E.g. do you want alot of text wraps, should the pics fit neatly into columns, are you going to go for the very creative approach, instead of the structured column approach, will the text read down coloumns or along columns.
Also pick about 2 or 3 fonts which are clear to read and fit the criteria: mini painting. MAybe have one font for headers (and possibly subheaders) and one font for body copy.
You will have to address at this first so people dont make different styles of pages, because then the book/magazine will just look a rabble.
Hope this helps starting off. (And if any help is needed i could do a few pages, but i cannot promise anything major due to Uni work.)

The problem with the pictures is that the article layout on the site isn\'t standardised, so people have either gone with what they think looks best, or what works, or however they could get the images into the document.

To go with that is the lack of standard size, which while between the srticles isn\'t a huge issue, but within an article it can cause problems.

As far as the font properties go, that will be a lot easier. We\'ll have to see.

Is this to be a printed book/magazine? If so i would go for an A5 sized page, so a double page spread would be A4.
If its just going to be an online PDF then A4 size pages will probably work best.
Are the articles just going to be copied and pasted to pages and then collated? I thought that the pics were going to be taken out, resized, and placed back into the article in a magazine format.

At the moment it\'s just going to be an online PDF. The articles that we have permission for I hav captured all of them, but just into Word. so I can take them home and work on them offline.

We will probably have to resize the images just to keep the PDF size down. Of course, you don\'t want to make the images unclear when they get resized which might be a problem.

@Iahatiel: I’ve never seen a spellchecker miss a misspelled word, unless there are variants to the way it can be spelled. You obviously have much more experience then me at this, so I won’t argue. I also wrote that statement when I was extremely tired, so I do realize a working knowledge of spelling is helpful when editing. However, if mistakes were found in documents written and checked in word, then you have to blame human error. If I spell the wrong word correctly, the program will not see that, That is why you need to go over a document line by line, proofreading both the raw copy on screen and a printed version. For some reason I find it easier to spot errors when they are on paper.

You’ll never have to worry about a computer taking your job, because sometimes a sentence just sounds ‘off’, and only by adjusting the way something is said can you fix that.

Right so a bit of an update. Things have been a bit hectic recently, so I haven\'t had a chance to think about the painting guide much. Couple that with intermittent internet access for the last few weeks and you have the lack of any form of communication. This should hopefully resolve itself soon, and I\'ll be contacting all those kind enough to offer their help.
