Color Shapers/rubber tipped tools..

I noticed the CMoN shop is carrying these now:

They are very similar (at least in looks) to the set of Color Shapers I have.

While I really like the Color Shapers to help with smoothing of milliput, I've noticed on Pro Create or Green Stuff the tip is just not firm enough. (I even have the EXTRA FIRM)

So, I'm thinking maybe these tools are a bit closer to what I'd like.

Anyone have any experience with them, or advice on how I'm using the color shapers incorrectly??

I've got a silly question: what are colour shapers for? I've seen them, but I've never seen them in use. Closest I could find was a clay shaper, which is supposedly used to finish clay pottery items. Are colour shapers similar, i.e. for finishing sculpts? Can one use them for paint, i.e. pushing paint around?

I think they're marketed as being for WHATEVER YOU WANT YOUR IMAGINATION IS THE LIMIT. That said, I haven't tried them for paint, but they're decent enough for some greenstuff sculpting.

This is a guess but I'm pretty sure that these will be softish judging by the colour.

I have two greys and for me that's fine for the consistency of GS. You might be 'overusing' them, for tasks that are better suited to cocktail sticks or other rigid tools.

Their original intent was to shape or otherwise move paint around on the painting surface. As NSA says, now they're pretty much a do-whatever-you-like kinda thing since lots of additional applications have been figured out by people working in various crafts.

Yep, I think you are right. But I would really like something that is an 'in between' from the metal tool to the rather softish color shaper.

Ideally, I was thinking the rubber of a pencil eraser would have the right firmness. I was curious if these new rubber ends were closer to that....but probably not.

I would have thought the black-tipped ones were actually!

Obviously individual taste/preferences vary, but using hard tools successfully is just a matter of the right 'touch' and is after all how most sculptors work. If you do still want something not quite rigid you might like to consider making one or two from PTFE rod, which is supposed to be stiffish but with some give.

Would these be handy for creating chop in water effects?
Probably.
