colouring minis in photoshop

I seen a post somewhere once about a monochrome black+white shot of a mini that had been put through paintshop or photoshop n order to colour it to determine test colour schemes. Does anyone have a link to a thread about this or more info? Im also interested in how photoshop can be used to determine zenithal highlights on a model, i.e, if you took a mono shot of the mini then put a lightsource on it and used that for reference whilst painting.

You can\'t really do that, at least not in the way I imagine you\'re thinking. Have a look at this recent article:

Coloring a model in Photoshop is rather easy if you have any experience at all using the program. The easiest way to do so is applying the colors on new layers above the original pic and using the layer blending options to produce the desired effect.

As for applying the lighting like you are asking - that isn\'t something you are going to be able to do even remotely easily in photoshop. You need 3D software, along with a digital 3D model of your desired miniature to apply the light source to produce favorable shadows. Simulating that process in a 2D program like Photoshop is just going to give you poor results.

You don\'t need to go anywhere near Photoshop to simulate zenithal highlighting.

Put the camera on a tripod, dim the lights (get it DARK) and spotlight your mini with a Maglite/coloured gel/sweet wrapper from the desired direction. Simple.

To do that in photoshop would require hours of varying transparecy masks.
If you are interested in the 3d app approach go see the pixologic website. ZBursh is an amazing program where you can make a very simple approx of a miniature and its stance in minutes then apply any manor of lights.

I\'m so tempted to give it a try. Though not sure if the time it would take would be worth it.

Prefer to flex the aul Minds Eye. Builds imagination and attention to detail. So rusty at the moment but getting back into the swing of things

For a basic look you could mask the area you want to color and then color on a new layer and set the transparency to 50% or something.
