Combat Question - Monsters with Defense Dice

When attacking a monster with defense dice, does the monster have to roll them? I ask because I had won the first two scenarios of BtG and was close to killing Frank, but two players decided to team up and have one attack Frank and the other (the player to the right) decide not to roll Frank's defense (similar to how he could choose not to attach in a Payback reaction).

I'd say no, he can't drop rolling them... If a monster has dice it will use them.

On a related note, I have a question about the Spear Beastmen.
They have a +1 Die when they are close to another monster. Does this apply to defense as well as attack? Just wondering since this would actually make it worth dazing them.

psousa781 - Yes, the controlling player has to roll the defense dice. They are not "controlling" a payback reaction when they do so.

Gormash - Yes, defense as well as attack. It says +1 die when close to another monster and does not differentiate if it is attack or defense only, so yes, both.

Thanks for the replies! In a similar vein, can a player choose not roll defense for one of their Heroes? I ask because I purposely triggered three guard reactions and didn't defend in order to die so my next turn I could rest and respawn my Hero close to my other Heroes.

I believe you are required to roll your defense. As this would be a part of the suicide rule where you can't take an action that would intentionally kill your character.

I know that holds true with resting and exchanging equipment that would result in a death, but wasn't sure if the defense dice was the same since it isn't as much an action you are taking as it is choosing not to take an action. I love semantics.

I would agree that defense always has to be rolled no matter what. And in that regard, if you're trying to get yourself killed, your defense dice don't help a whole lot unless you have a ton of them, as it's a 1 in 3 chance of rolling a shield or crit.
