StormWarning, welcome to CMON. Unfortunately to make you a better painter, we (I) have to tell you what we(I) don\'t like. Let me start with it is not a bad mini.

BUT:
Too much color. Dark Elf ASSASSIN? He could sneak around at Mardi Gras with Smoth, but in the woods or alleys ??

Why is one side of his sword hilt red and the other brown?

Photo work is lacking on his face. A shadow is covering most of the detail there. Photos are almost as important as paint. We cannot judge without good photos. It is an art as well.

Your painting is fairly neat (you can stay inside the lines) but your blending needs work. This is especially noticable on the back shot where the cloak has some stripes on it (grey/grey). Think in terms of 3 colors (shadow/main/highlight). Most of your stuff looks like you have 2.

Still with me? I did like the free hand gold work. Very nice. I wish my hands were that steady.

OK? come on over to \"off-topic\" and relax. Paint another mini and try to make it better - we all do that.

I agree with airhead that you\'re a very neat painter, which is always a good thing in this game. I think you\'re off to a really good start. You\'re also daring and confident enough to try freehand, and you made a good go at it.

Suggestions:
1. Fewer colors, less can be more. Choose color combos carefully. Check out this bit about color http://www.wegotgame.net/jen/colors.html, and maybe check out a book about color theory from the library.

2. More careful blending. It takes patience and control, but the results can be smashing. Again, I agree with airhead, think at least three values for each color, and build them up gradually using thin layers of paint.

3. It looks like you ignored his eyes. If you\'re brave enough to go after freehand like that (and pull it off!) you shouldn\'t be afraid to tackle the eyes on your minis. Without them, the figure looks unfinished. Plus, there are alot of options for handling them which can add another level of personality.

Good luck! Keep painting! Cheers!
