Comments on my NMM attempts

OK, I ordered Hybrid some time ago (still waiting for it), but to be worthy to paint the mini\'s I figured I should learn how to paint NMM. (Now I know some people will say that NMM is not necessary and that it\'s beter to use metallics, But I like rackham\'s mini\'s better with NMM, and I\'ll have to learn sometime.) So I grabbed an old ork from the stash and started experimenting, the result being this:
Attempt at NMM
(sorry about the slow loading)

I\'m quite happy with the gold on his belt and his helmet, but the grey metals aren\'t working that well. I think partly because the paintwork is very rough, because when zoomed out I think it looks better. But the helmet still doesn\'t look right. So if anyone would like to add some useful comments for improvement I\'d be really thankful. (I\'m sorry to post another NMM-topic but if you really get sick of these, you can always just ignore them)

you gotten a good start. I thinkl you\'ve got the basis of the techinque down, all it needs is some refinement. Silver NMM is by far in my opinion much harder to acheive a good look with than gold is. Your silvers i think would look much better if there were more layers (not has many abrubt changes in color. grey scales needs very little color change between layers to look good) Also might wanna have a go at painting NMM copper. Chrispy has a good part in his article about it. And i have found that a blues do a little better than pure whites for NMM. I use a mix of chaos black and regal blue for my mid-nor dwarves. Check out pic # 47036 for a WIP hes taking forever but i like the out come. Overall good job, it takes practice more than anything.

Cheers

Thanks! about that practice: I\'ve just spent the last hour and a half practising on another ork\'s axe and already it looks much smoother. It\'s really encouraging, although I don\'t think my black and white paints are going to last very longlol.
I just looked at your work on that Mid-Nor sentinel, it looks awesome! I see now what you mean by using blues, they give it much more depth.. Well I\'m off practising some more :)

i\'m afraid i don\'t get any metallic effect on the belt or the helmat. it looks like bone to me.

the axe looks good though. at least i get what your trying to do. and it isn\'t shiny chrome which would look super dumb on a ork. try doing some rust effects on it. should look great.

the spike on the helmat has a spiral highlight on it. lose it. the highlight will be closer to a straight line. like a cylinder.

anyway it\'s really good for a first go. keep at it and show us the finished ork!

overambitious

Well, I may have been a bit overambitious, I was thinking: I\'ve had it with these ork axes... let\'s try something new... and I saw my box of unpainted Legion of the Damned marines, and thought: \'hm, wouldn\'t it be nice if they were grey knights? I could try out some nice NMM on them\'
\"you didn\'t!\" you cry?
...well I did:
EDIT:there used to be a pic here but it didn\'t work so here\'s the link
Ok, it doesn\'t really look like metal (I forgot to use blue) But I think it\'s not looking too bad either... Waddya think?

I\'m looking at a box that says Angel Towns? Is that what you was aiming at?

Actually, I like the helmet and not just the gold. I think the grey metal part looks good. In fact I like it better than the axe head. As Hi-lit-r said, your transitions need some work, but the only real solution to that is practice.

As for the other piece, it appears there\'s a problem with the link.

That is one of the most impressive NMM I\'ve seen...

Havn\'t seen that many though.

Seriously I really like it. it comes out looking more like steel than silver which is a bonus in my book (what\'s the good of soft metal armour?)

Canvas style??

lordofthepit...it doesn\'t look NMM to me...the axe of the orc...but of another style of painting...the canvas style.

i saw before someone (i believe it was Fredy on his barbarian piece) who did something similar and made his/her mini look like its a canvas painting instead of a mini painting...impressive! :)

Highlight all the edges just not the leading edges, especially on a nimiature. The NMM will look even more awkward from different angles if you don\'t. The helmut on the smace marine looks very nice thought, you should add more blue to the mix to get a more argent feel. Keep up the goold work.

Thanks all for the comments and tips. It\'s all very encouraging. So encouraging in fact, that when My copy of Hybrid finally arrived, I couldn\'t wait and started right away on one of the hybrids. I painted it last night and was really happy with the result and uploaded it immediately, even tough it was 4:00 AM when I finished it, and now I see some flaws that I would rather have fixed before posting it. But still I\'m pretty proud of the result, so please go take a look:

And let me know what you think, either here or as a comment (beg, beg  )
