This is my 7th and 8th miniature ever that I have painted, so I would love some comments for improvement before I put them up on CMoN. I know the photos suck...

The monk is finished. You can\'t see a lot of the leather distressing I did cuz I can\'t seem to take a decent pic...

These are horrible pics but I am too drunk to take decent photos...

The orc shaman isn\'t finished... Still have to highlight him in places and finish his staff...

I can work on some better photos... comments and criticisms welcome please.

I think the monk is really nicely done... nice face and skintones also nice shadin and colour combi on his clothes

highlighting on boots could be a little more refined.... esp the cuffs... more subtle.... er.... question... altho the paints look okay I cant shake the feeling that the paint texture on this figure is a little rough and there is a slightly grundgy feel.. is that the effect ya wanna give?

Orc shaman:
paint seems a little thick on the mini.. also I get the impression the surface of the figurine might be a little rough to start with and needs some sanding...... the effect is that of a stone statue of an orc shaman painted..... if the surface of this figurine is rough, you might wanna strip paint and sand it before painting ....

me two cents

comments on a couple of friendly looking chaps..

Hiya Malfecto,

Both of these minis look pretty good. Maybe its just the way the photo turned out but I think you need to thin your paint down with water a little more ( both these minis look very grainy).

Areas such as the shoulder pads and boots (on the top mini) seem a bit abrupt in the transition from basecolour ie:snakebite leather to highlight color ie:bronzed flesh/bleached bone (just guessing colors used).
Layering watered down paints is a good way to acheive a smoother highlight.

I really like your shading and choice of colors on these minis:):)

You\'re sure on track for some remarkably good painting in the not too distant future, especially given that these are your 7th & 8th painted minis.

Paint on :)

Wow...7th or 8th mini...I\'m impressed...

k...now on to the critique...

Face well done...

Nice clean separation and detail...on the mini...

Colors a bit subdued...look nice...but won\'t get wows out of people...I have the same problem...I tend to paint very Earthy and Natural...

Studs...to close to the same color of the leather...so the just blend in...Would suggest Goldish or Silver color...

Need another highlight color...It looks like your using just to 2 layers...Matter of fact...if you did this to almost every place you highlighted...it would have a dramatic effect on your overall piece. (Leather, Weapon...etc)...Go easy on this highlight...it should be very subtle...almost non existant.

k...need to highlight the Red and Yellow

The Shaman needs a Light Wash/Glaze after highlights are added...This will help to smooth out the finish...

Thank you for your input everyone.

As to the highlighting... yes, I tend to stop at 2 because I get freaked that I am going to mess up if I try to highlight it further or it is going to be too harsh. I guess I need to just buckle down and paint it.

As for the shaman, the paint was thinned with a Future/Golden Retarder/Water mix... I think it looks thick because he has all these damn holes all over his clothes. I thought about sanding him down, but the holes really go too deep. I think they are meant to make him look tattered.

So maybe a light wash on the monks boots with the first highlight color? then a bit of white and highlight it again on the tops of the boot?

I will work on putting more highlights. I guess that is why my pieces look flat. I really appreciate the help everyone!
