[Commission] Blood Angels army

Hey there!

Again, a new project log for a new army project. This time it's Blood Angels and we start off with Terminators! Some of you may notice a pattern there (judging from this and this) but this time it's totally different! You see, after painting 3rd edition SH BA Terminators for playing Space Hulk and painting BA Terminators from GW/FW to play Space Hulk with, it's the SH Terminators rebased and painted to be used in a 40k army this time!


Right, the week's been a bit crazy and it's been way longer than I thought until this update. I even am not as far with painting as I'd liked to be. Anyway, here's the current state of things on the new BA terminators:

I'll try to finish them tonight. The whole first batch is 16 BA Terminators (all 12 from the Space Hulk box plus four more with FW shoulderpads) and there should be more stuff coming up for this army as soon as the terminators are finished.

So that's that, I'll get tons more stuff done the upcoming week. C&C welcome as always and thanks for looking!

Vèry nice shade of red, love it. Nice colour scheme as well, using only metallics and no glowy power weapons. If I'd had to give a comment, perhaps some thin, very dark brown or black outlining along the plates to create some more depth on the red? Perhaps the same for the gold metallic detailing? A normal ink might be too harsh perhaps so a heavily thinned one, or even better, thinned oil paint. Oil paint tends to suck itself into every nook and cranny like you wouldn't believe. Ànd it doesn't tone the underlying layer of paint as much as an acrylic ink.

@Meph: Thanks very much for the reply. I agree; these guys lack a little depth. The thing about using oils to shade intrigues me; I might look into that!

I hope you like them so far; they're as good as finished. I'll also post some pictures of other stuff on here in a sec. I'm really kind of burned out on BA Terminators at the moment. Anyway, comments are welcome as always and see you soon!

Well, for oil paints, while they may seem daunting and time-consuming at first, the actual application of them is very smooth.
For the best result, you could spray the models with a light coat of satin varnish, or eve better, glossy varnish. This is just a very thin coat to both protect the underlying paint but more importantly, to better increase the fluidity of the ink (works well for acrylic inks as well). Thin the oil paint with some modeling turpentine (odourless), a ratio of somewhere between 5:1 to 10:1 turpentine/paint paste should be about right and it needs a lot of shaking before it mixes properly.
Then just apply as you would any other ink. After a few strokes, the different nature of it compared to acrylic ink should become apparent, it's much more forgiving. It's needs quite a long time to dry afterwards, best to leave it overnight. And the cool thing is, even after drying you can adjust and correct the paint with a brush damp with turpentine if needed. Leave to dry again and finally fix with a coat of satin or matte varnish, whichever you prefer.
I personally prefer satin, as does produce a more beautiful effect. Matte often tends to look a bit too flat.

Oh, and don't be shy to post a few detail shots, especially the gems and golden metal bits look intriguing.

That Gatling gun is gnarly and made of win. Pretty figs though, mate (especially like that the depth of the metals matches the armor). Would enjoy seeing some closer pics of the un-helmeted dudes.
