Comparisons/Advice from the Krylon Users.

Alright, I'm brand new to this whole mini painting thing...& am freakin' HOOKED. Did some searches & checked the sticky link thread...but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

Here goes:

To prime: I use the P3 Primer, which seems fine from my limited experience & not too expensive.
To finish: I use the KRYLON CRYSTAL CLEAR ACRYLIC & then hit it with DULCOTE after it's all nice & sealed. Seemed lovely to me.

My question is, Have any of you used any of these other Krylon products for sealing? How do they compare? The low-odor one seems attractive, is latex-based, so i'm curious if it seals as well. The triple glaze, oddly, has less chemicals in it (from what I can see by the MSDS) but does it come out too thick?

I also use Chrystal Clear Acrylic Gloss but then use Krylon's Chrystal Clear Acrylic Flat to reduce the shine.

I start and finish with krylon. Fusion for my base and their Chrystal Clear to protect the mini when done. I try to do thin coats so I dont lump up the mini and smooth out the details.

I have the exact same finishing process as you do right now — Krylon Gloss (twice) and then Dullcote.

To be honest, the Krylon "Flats" work better than anything you'll find, and much better than the P3 or anything else. There are Krylon Primers, but you'll want to skip those, being that they're thicker and made to be sanded. The Krylon Flat Black will give a wonderful, silky-smooth surface; the only thing better might be a polyurethane primer shot through an airbrush.

I'd long sworn by the Krylon grey primer, but I'll be willing to check how the Krylon flats work.

Have you guys found the Krylon clear matte spray is more of a satin? My bottle is very noticeable a satin and I'm wondering if maybe I just got a bad can.

My matte clear is satin as well. Krylon is not one of my favorite products, but i know a lot of folks here love the stuff. I live in the ninth pit of hell so i think that might have something to do with it.

One caution on using Krylon flat as primer is that it might not work well with resin or plastic figures, and especially not on any PVC figures (Reaper's Bones). Used flat black as primer for my little article on priming Bones, and it didn't dry properly and crackled the acrylic paint afterwards.

Arguably, it may have been that I didn't wait long enough for it to dry, but I recall going to the data sheets for the primer and flat paints, and there was a chemical difference. The flat did have a chemical (acetone?) that didn't play well. The mini was still tacky feeling for quite a while. Automotive primer didn't have that. So, a good auto primer would probably be the best way to go for a black primer.

Now, that said, I don't think there would be a problem on metal minis, and I'm extrapolating from the PVC-ish material to resin and plastic.
