Competition Entry: Warmachine - Skarre

While I normally do keep my posts to Warhammer 40k goodness I\'m hoping that I can get some feedback on this one. This is the next competition piece for my local gaming store. This is also my first Warmachine model.

I left off the backpack skulls as I thought that they were really, really silly. The only thing I did to set this one apart otherwise was add glue to the base to simulate water.

After reading the card she comes with I really aimed for a sea witch feel. I wanted her to blend in to the ocean - with only hints of the daemonic energies that keep her afloat.

Unfortunately, once again, while I have a light box I have seriously under powered lights. There are six layers on the blue of her coat and no actual black. Boo hoo. I fiddled with levels (you can tell looking at the blue background) in the various shots - and I can produce more on request if someone wants to see something specific.

Okay, I\'m by no means a photo expert (hell, I\'m barely a novice) but I think the issue here is the background color is pulling all the blue out of the mini. I would try to change it to maybe green or yellowish.

Oh, duh, what a good idea. My light box has a reversible blue/grey background -- I\'ll flip it over next time I set it up and see if that helps.

well well well were to start......:D
alright this looks fan frickin tabulous imho.
the wood of the bow is great and the only thing i think that is holding this back is maybe the darker theme and then POW the gold on the sword and the light green osl on the back.
dunno might be the pics im sure this looks much better in person. ill tell you when i see it:cool:. the only other problem i see is the horns on her head look like a after thought. when i buy this fig on tomorrow cause its that cool :eek: thats the first thing im cutting off. great job so far:beer:
oh one more thing maybe make the eyes brighter than the osl on back would be evened out imo .

@COG: Good news, the horns are separate pieces - you\'ll need to GS the holes where they live but you don\'t need to cut \'em off.

I\'ll try getting new pics - to give you an idea of the off colours... the eyes *ARE* the same super bright green to white that the backpack is.

I considered leaving gold off of the sword but figured it was in character. It does stand out a bit, since gold dulls but doesn\'t tarnish like other metals.

This one will be in the store in a couple of weeks. Do let me know what you think after you see it. Cheers.

wow nice mini, hadn\'t seen it before.
And I think you definetly did it justice. Love the hair color, it works really nice with the rest. I\'d vote for adding pupils to the eye though, personal taste :p

I managed to get a (slightly) better picture. I am now convinced that the problem is simply my little camera. For this one I\'m going to try and get a buddy with a real camera to get a pic for me. The grey background did make a difference.

the background made a BIG difference.
the blues look blue and the snaazeberry taste like snaazeberry.lol again very good job. i pomise to vote this time.
BTW i just got a FW nurgle dread from the consign cage at Great escape. theres another one.... thought of getting both cause its a good deal, oh and cause i couldnt find the dang SKARRE chick. i think yuse guys took da last ones.:cussing: oh well theres always next time ...

Care to share how you painted that wood, it looks exactly like driftwood and would come in handy for a topsecret ogre pirates project I am working on (damn!.... Said too much!lol)

The only bit that I am noy too keen on is her eyes, its a bit hard to tell if she is wearing make up or if they are big freaky looking eyes.

The driftwood was a kick, actually. I had painted it and then shown my wife. \"That doesn\'t look anything like driftwood,\" she said, \"let\'s go for a walk.\"

So we walked down the street to a yard that has driftwood in it. \"See how white that is,\" she asked, \"that\'s what you\'re after, right?\"

So back I went. The method:

Black base - NOT brown
Scorched Brown - drybrush the whole thing but not too thick

Khaki - drybrush all but the extreme shadows lightly

Bleached Bone - drubrush 80% of the highlights lightly

White - drybrush the whole thing lightly and heavily on the extreme highlights

Black wash - the whole thing with a thin, thin wash

I then went back in with a couple of greens and stippled some wet mould where it meets the water. Rust the metals and such and poof, you\'re done.

What I think really makes it pop are the extreme shadows. Top photo, grey background, next to her right foot - you can see the Scorched Brown shadow cut strongly next to the white - but you can see the black lines in the brown.
