air is air.
Not all compressors are made equal though.

Diaphragm, can be very quiet or very noisy. Small airbrush sized compressors tend to be quiet.

Piston, these are the serious beasts you find in mechanics shops, etc.

Rotary, these are luxury items for serious airbrushers. Very quiet (like your refrigerator), but pricey and generally need maintenance.

What are you going to do with it?
airbrush only? small will do.
want to run a regular spray gun? You want at least a 1.5 hp (check the CFM requirements on the spray gun vs. your compressor.)

Even with the small models, you will want a tank to help smooth the air. This eliminates the pulsing of the compressor and gives water a chance to fall out before it ruins your work.

Moisture trap and regulator = a must.

What part of the world are you in?

i am looking for something to use with airbrush only, mainly for tanks, but will be moving on to large scale models with oils when i get confident with it. i am from the uk.

A budget would also be helpful. They can range from $100 at the low end to much much more if you get a fancy one :)

I got a house of tools piston type, like 5 HP or something. It\'s awesome. It runs off a tank, and I got a decent hobby minded regulator plus a moisture trap.

Noisy as all hell, but it doesn\'t run constantly and it\'s out in the garage. I use the same airbursh as you and I reccomend getting a big \'ole beast from a hardware store. I think for the money it\'ll be a bargain.

Ive been using the same compressor but corded for the US for 2 years. Nice little compressor.

look on ebay you may find the same compressor for a better deal in the UK.

I do recommend a small compressor with a reserve tank and it will give you a more steady air flow.

Things to remember when air brushing, thin your paints to the consistency of milk and spray at the lowest pressure possible.
