ok i need some help.
yesterday i turned the security on my blekin wireless router on - lost all internet connection - so i rang belkin and eventually after 1 hour i got supposed internet back on - only problem is i couldnt acess most sites - google was fine but here wasnt. eventually after more phonecalls and further loss i managed struggling on my own to get back some conectivity but still only some sites working. eventually over a few hours i could get back onto all those sites that i couldnt before, so worked fine most of today then thi afternoon suddenly all went off again, then came back after a while then went again, now its back again. had some help from people but no one can understand why i can acess some sites but not others or why it gradually allows me back into them or then goes off. i get the same problem through wireless or wired. email works fine through all this.
really at a loss, Belkin are useless - all in india reading from a screen - tiscali are not much better.

so any of you computer whizzes got any ideas?
i havent changed anything on my computer apart from the router settings
im running windows xp if that help

sorry internet went off again!! im running service pack 3 2600

drivers all up to date.

i tried a laptop wired to the router and it has exactly the same problem as this comp

Im no whizz when it comes to networking im afraid, only recently got a wired router myself. Does it work normally if you turn the security off? Have you tried uninstalling all the router softer and deleting everything to do with it and then re-installing from scratch? Sorry can\'t be more help , this is my least favourite thing to sort out.

everything shows as working fine - router has been reset a couple of times - firmware updated defauults restored - belkin say its settings are right. spent hours on the phone to them but to be honest they are just reading from a screen rather than acually knowing whats wrong and i dont think the language barrier helps

maybe throwing out the window will work!
now cmon is working whereas others that were before arent now , so it just seems random when a site will work or not

it could be conflicting with your other security software, and XP doesn\'t like extra firewalls, if you have a firewall in your anti-virus turn off the window one, see if that helps

I\'ve had the same problem a few months back. Upon calling my ISP/Cable company they told me to contact Linksys so that they can send a refresh signal to my router. The problem seemed to be a conflict with the IP addresses on my network, therefore causing the router to think there was a security breach and blocking the connection.

Once Linksys refreshed the router it worked for a few hours then locked up again. I ended up calling again and had them resend the refresh. (Both phone calls took a couple of hours each.) It started working again this time for only about half hour at which point it blocked the connection again. Not wanting to spend another two hours on the phone, I just went out and got a new router, and haven\'t had a problem with the new one yet.

if it was blocking it would that not block all sites?

as for other firewalls i dont have the windows one running - i have a norton one instead - i turned all of that stuff off earlier but made no difference

routers only few months old maybe i will send it back under warranty

To be honest with you if it is blocking then yea, it should be blocking all sites, but that is the only thing I can think of. I think your best bet at this point is try sending it back under warranty and see what happens. The one that I had problems with was about 3 to 4 years old so that\'s why I just went out and got a new one.

My question for you is what prompted you to turn on the router security in the first place? I assume you didn\'t have WEP/WPA/etc. enabled and your router was wide open?

Did you just turn on those features to block people trying to access your router, or did you turn on _all_ of the security settings, like port/ip filtering, etc? For a home user all you really need is the basic key system set up and PAT/NAT if your router offers it (most modern ones do), and shouldn\'t have to worry about the more complicated stuff.

yep i turned it on as nothing was enabled wep wpa etc, thats when i lost all connection to the internet - after ringing belkin for help they got it running but only to what it is now

as it is its on factory defaults which is no security enabled - so as it was before any problems

Oddly, my Belkin router went down over the weekend... at first we thought (as did our ISP) that it was the fault of a telecom engineer who\'d been working on a line fault (which we\'ve still got ).

The router won\'t keep the security details and I have to keep putting them back in again as the exchange isn\'t recognising my details when this happens (apparently) and I end up losing either connection to the net. I spoke to my ISP and they reckon getting a new router is the answer.... it\'s a Belkin 54g btw.

Check your dns settings, and run a trace on comand prompt. Run > cmd then type tracert [website]

Also it could well be tiscali. I had a VPN on my home internet and everthing worked fine except the VPN IP i tested it on to pcs and could not ping the address. I phoned friends and got them to oing it and it wirked fine. I had a massive rant to tiscali (in india) and they tried to fob me off. Not admitting they blocked the IP. After i got off the phone the IP mysteriously started working!!

I read somewhere Tiscali have software to block sites you may download alot off to stop to downloading excessively! :cussing:

Check the IP of your cable modem/DSL modem...
Check the address of your router....

192.168.1.1 ? change one of them to 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.2.1

I spent 3 hours with a service tech one night only to find this was the problem.

If you enable WEP/WPA on your router and enter in a passphrase you need to set up your wireless adapter on your PC with the exact same information to work.

Also, I wouldn\'t bother setting static IP addresses, just use the router\'s DHCP settings and set your PCs to obtain addresses automatically; that way if you have friends come over a lot their devices can access your network (after inputting the security information, that is) without a huge song and dance.

Darklord, if you turned on WEP/WPA on your router and didn\'t update your computer, it might explain why some sites \"worked\" and others didn\'t. You might have been seeing cached copies of the websites you\'ve been to recently, yet the browser may have been running in offline mode.

Oh, and for the love of all that\'s secular, DO NOT MESS with the IP addresses for your external connection, which would be the network between your router and access point (Cable, FIOS, DSL, etc). The 192.168.1.1 network is NOT the external IP but the internal IP to your router. The reason the number is the default on all modern routers is that they all do a version of Network Address Translation/Port Address Translation which allows your provider to give your router an IP on a subnet without having to give each individual user\'s network a ton of \"actual\" IPs. Most routers are set up to automatically pull that information from the access point, so you should do _NOTHING_ to it at all.

The 192.168.1.1 network you can mess with all you want, though. However, if you change the subnet mask (usually 255.255.0.0 I believe) make sure you have it exactly the same on all the machines on the network. For the most part you shouldn\'t need to mess with that at all.

apart from activating the security on the router, what settings did he change. from what I can see he is using a dsl/cable broadband modem. one of the noted settings that should not be changed is the MTU it should stay around 1500 if on dsl, i think 1501 if cable modem.
to me it sounds like he is losing connectivity due to a restriction of packet information, if anything he should turn off his wireless security and see if anything resumes if not reset the entire modem to default settings, if works correctly, activate the security starting at WEP 64 bit, though wireless security should have no impact whatsoever on the actual connectivity of all internet, only wireless. If he is experiancing wired issues, that he has changed a settings that controls global communication on the whole router. This is only one possible issue. MTU being packet control. Most drastic problem could be dying router. I have one of those.

° 5060 through 5063 using UDP protocol
° 123 using UDP protocol
° 69 using UDP protocol
° 53 using UDP protocol
° 10,000 through 20,000 using UDP protocol

well had another full day of crap with this - after more calls to belkin and trying a recommended tweak program i was still no better off, so got the router swapped - just had another call to belkin to try and get that running, right now the laptop is working wired but the wireless desktop isnt so really not holding my breath!!

I tossed my belkin router a couple of months ago due to, what sounds like a very similar problem. I worked with it for days and days and eventually decided to just get a new router. I\'ve not had a problem since.

got the wireless working and so far fingers crossed after 2 hours no problems yet - of course that may change anytime but its nice to have a break - its like screaming babies going to sleep!
