Conan and GW?

I don\'t know if you\'ve all seen the fine piece of celluoid Conan the Barbarian staring practically fresh-off-the-boat Arnold Schwarzenagger but I saw some striking resemblence to GW\'s minis. In particular one of the bad guys wheres a helmet that looks almost just like the helmet of the new Champion of Khorne. Also Conan wears a pendant around his neck that is almost an exact replica of the symbol for Chaos Undivided. Maybe I\'m just seeing things but I had a good laugh imagining GW copying off of a movie like Conan the Barbarian. lol

I\'d be surprised if GW DIDN\'T take from Conan. That is a staple of the fantasy genre. Now for a really \"fresh off the boat\" Arnold movie, I recommend \"Herculese Takes Manhattan\" starring some guy named \"Arnold Strong\" whose voice is dubbed because of his awful accent. It\'s absolutely awful in a funny way, unlike Conan the Destroyer which is just awful.

Conan and GW

Is there any staple of the Fantasy Genre that GW HASN\'T stolen from? Come on, people!! All of the WHFB range is nothing but a rip off of Tolkein!! As far as really bad Ahnold movies go, check out \"The Villian.\" It\'s as bad as \"Hercules in New York.\"

I\'m gonna say it. I kinda like the Conan movies. That might be a poor reflection of my character but I really did. Crap acting and all. Anyone know where I can get the DVD?

The Conan movies were not really \"Conan\" movies, they were \"Arnold\" movies, made solely as a vehicle for Arnold. This is stated in interviews with those responsible. And Milius knew little or nothing of his subject, just listen to his commentary on the special edition dvd. There will not be a true Conan movie until someone with a passion for, and knowledge of, the subject is involved.
That said, I can watch and enjoy the first one, but it just isnt a true adaptation of Conan and I just think of it as a generic swords and sorcery movie.

Sorry, that was off topic from the original post, but as a lifelong Conan fan this is a subject that gets me going. If I don\'t stop now I\'ll wind up boring you all with the many reasons behind my stance... lol

Almost forgot - a blatant rip-off of the first Conan movie is the old Ral Partha \"The Cimmerian\". They obviously didn\'t get the rights to Conan, but this guy even has the sword from the movie. I have posted him, his id is 9944.

And isnt the new Traeg by Reaper another one? Looks just like Arnold when he is invading Thulsa Doom\'s stronghold, even seems to be imitating a pose rom that scene.

No one has the right to make fun of anything that ever involved Bruce \"Jesus Christ\" Campbell. Even the scene in Evil Dead where the chic gets raped by vines is pure gold, simply due to being in a BC movie.

(to kevd82) Do you mean your stance on the genre, or the \"stance\" of your avatar there? :D Seriously, well semi-seriously though, I feel your pain, I\'m a Conan junkie too, read every one of the books i can get that still had Robert E. Howard\'s hand in them, too few. :~(
Can\'t bring myself to read the newer stuff, but the first movie wasn\'t too godawful a mutilation.
ummm.... I\'d better stop now before I reveal what a true freak I am. Oh no, To late!

Well I think It\'s kinda obvious in some ways. Conan\'s god is Crom.. the god of blood is Khorne. Conan also kills the evil snake men... in the old chaos book it sez that Slannesh appears as a giant snake to the Mauraders. And Khorne hates Slannesh... Now, to figure out how Kevin Bacon ties into this.... :p

Conan/ Bruce Campbell

I\'ve never read any of the Conan books. I\'ve only seen parts of the movies, never sat down and watched either of them, beginning to end. That said, Red Sonja was another fairly kickass Ahnold vehicle. Bruce Campbell IS the shiz-nit-o-bam-snip-snap-zzap.

I liked the first Conan movie. The only Conan book I read was Howard\'s only novel: Day of the Dragon (or something like that) and I can say it didn\'t conflict with the movie in any way. I think it would make a cool movie too. Wonder if Arnold would be interested or if he\'s too busy deciding to run for Governor of California???

Funniest thing I saw in quite a while was a blurb on The Onion: Kevin Bacon tied to Al Quada.lol

Bit of a Conan fan here so I really ought to say my piece. No-one should be ashamed of liking the first Conan film - it was directed by John Milius (Big Wednesday, writing credit on Apocalypse Now) and had a screenplay by Milius and Oliver Stone. Whilst they took some liberties with the story of Conan\'s youth, I personally feel they stayed pretty true to the feel of the books. Great film in my opinion (with some surprising pedigree).

Conan the Destroyer on the other hand was just pants

I did like the first film (just bought the DVD actually), and the feel of the movie is indeed pretty true to Howard, but to say they (Milius, etc.) took liberties is an understatement. They took bits and pieces of various stories and threw them into one big hodge-podge. Valeria coming back from the dead - that is Belit in \"Queen Of The Black Coast\". Thulsa Doom is from the Kull stories, not Conan (although Marvel comics also used him in Conan stories).

Nothing against Milius at all, he is great. But he does not know Howard. The synopsis of his script for the third Conan movie shows that he is just making stuff up again after maybe scanning a few Howard stories (and if he did, then he must not have read very closely). If he does the next Conan movie, it could indeed be a very good movie, but it still won\'t be a true adaptation of Conan. But hey, if it creates interest in Conan and new books, computer games, MINIATURES I hope, and such come out then it cant be all bad.

And yes - Conan The Destroyer was an outrage!

Ok, now I am way off the original topic here! :wow:lol

Conan the Barbarian is indeed the better of the two films, but one has to understand the genre to appreciate the second film: Conan the Destroyer.

The fantasy genre is full of bad movies. Bad movies that refuse to poke fun at themselves, or other films. Conan the Destroyer was able to do this, while incorporating some decent special effects, and the greatness of early Swarzenegger films (by greatness, I mean the barely recognizable words he sometimes used...).

conan is the man

i agree conan the first was a hogde podge of howards books there is so much more that could have been done like the crypt scene. if there is a third movie i heard it would be as a conan the king type story if so i say scarpe the whole first 2 and do a 15 minute recap with computer stuff and the works that would lkick sorry way off teh subject

Sorry, but I don\'t think Conan is supposed to be funny or used as a vehicle to poke fun at the genre. There is plenty of bad stuff in the genre, but the original stories by Robert E. Howard do not fall in that category.

If someone wants stupid humor they can always watch the Deathstalker series.

HAHAHAHA I just watched \"Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell\" on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Oh man that movie is ambitiously bad. Mystery Science Theater does a great job with it tho lol

Now I\'m way off my own topic:eek:

Has anyone seen Ator the Fighting Eagle? That has to be the worst of the lot - its not meant to be funny, but it is so bad it is funny. It doesn\'t help that Miles O\'Keefe is Ator, but the ending is just hilarious. Ator rides off to destroy the Geometric Nucleus (?) and then there is a cut shot of a nuclear explosion (!) and then Ator riding back! Apparently barbarians are immune to nuclear explosions lol
