Conformist Non-Conformity

Was originally gonna post this in the 40k thread, but as it has more general aspects figured wtf.

So, do you ever have those days when you say why did I get the large army of guys who don't have a basic uniform to fall back on when painting? I'm working on orks atm, and making them have some uniformity, while keeping the ROF's individuals is making things slow.

I assume you mean other than "Are you nuts?":clown:
I think if you keep the basing consistant it will help.
When it comes to the minis themselves, maybe if you were to pick three or four clothing colours and rotate through them, so that they are consistant withing a range?
ex: blue red yellow & green (substitute your real colours)
orc1 blue pants, red shirt
orc2 red pants, yellow shirt
orc3 yellow pants, green shirt
etc
Best I could come up with.

What I've been doing is keeping the pants, boots, skin tone, and web gear consistent through the unit - and mixing up the shirts and such. And of course questioning my sanity for my army choice. :mad-tongue:

What do is paint one a year no matter what, and by then I forgot it is part of army... lol.

Seriously I try use a design here and there, like checkers etc, or on My Bad moon I use a standard back pole, etc.

Really, I AM pretty behind on my Orks, lol.

Well you have their skin, that will give some sort of unity. If you choosed earthy colours for the clothes - use a common colour as a shading colour (like burnt umber) to unify the various colours.

daGoz has good words there - you gotta do something like that if you don't want to end up in the happy house.

Just curious, why did you choose to paint orcs? Most painters I know who enjoy them are the kind of people who really dig the idea of doing something different on each one, and who don't care that it takes forever.

I got round that whole issue by choosing Blood Axes. As they seem to think thet're an IG army they all wear approximately the same yooniform which in this case is dark grey trousers and light grey vest. Once I've gone through all the basic boyz I might go back and add some red cammo stripes to them. They know what cammo pattern is, they just don't appreciate what it's for...

All of the dominant klanz have their own colurs associated with them and even though they're Orks you can attempt to impose some kind of uniformity if only to tie them together as an army.

@ Undave - They're Bloodaxes. Which is how I'm getting some uniformity in the pants, boots and such not (and skintones per sub unit - with the exception of my 'ard Boyz who're random colors) - I want some non conformity, but really haven't gotten around to the cammo pattern pants yet - I am kinda proud of the 'Spendable Redshirtz even if they are taking a beating here.

@ET - The orks are only one of the armies I'm working on - they just happen to be the ones I have here - aside from a few Space Marines. I chose orks cause I happen to like greenskins for the point cost on the board - and the madness you can paint them into - I just don't want them to look like every other cammo pattern Blood Axe horde out there. And I want to be able to easily tell who goes with what unit on the table, if that makes sense.
