Considering commissioning for a custom made/scratch built miniature. Where to turn?

Hello everyone!

I'm considering commissioning a totally scratch built miniature (A Warhammer 40,000 Terminator Captain) but as of yet I have not been able to find anyone offering these services. Do any of you create scratch built models, or do you know where I can find someone who does?

Project details

A Chapter Master in a Terminator armour (perhaps with a cloak). The armour itself should be pretty intricate with scroll work, purity seals and other ornaments. He's armed with two power fists and holding a large boltgun-ish weapon in both hands (got to be a fairly large weapon, since his hands got powerfists!). The gun have a bayonet attached to it (this counts as a power weapon in the game). He should be striding forward, with his gun pointing forward.

My Chapters symbol, a sword pointing down, should be visible on a shoulder pad/legplate or in other details in the armour. I'm hoping to find some good quality sculptors, but since I have no idea how much money is involved in this it's kind of hard to demand any kind of quality control. What's reasonable for a good sculpt? 100-200 dollars? More? You can probably trick me pretty bad here, if you want. I can get pretty cool custom made models for 20 dollars(scibbor), but then it's not custom built after my own specifications.

There are actually a number of studios that will convert and paint a model for you. Unless you are talking about a completely new sculpt, the whole blog community seems to have a commission set up. Off the top of my head, I know Goatboy does great conversions (his painting style doesn't work for everyone; it's very dark and gritty), Jawaballs is willing to do commisions, Santa Cruz Warhammer and some of the From the Warp guys...

However, if you are looking for a completely new sculpt that is not converted from existing minis, the only place I can think of off the top of my head is Troll Forged Miniatures. They have a board on their forums dedicated to commisions for new sculpts.

I have done a few commissions like that before. Question is, when you say completely scratch built do you mean a complete sculpt or one based on a terminator body?

I am indeed looking for a ground up, totally new sculpt. I've checked out troll forged miniatures and might poke them about it, but feel free to suggest other people as well!

Locutus: I'm not sure, but it seems scibbor is not doing things on request? I'll see what he has to say about that.

Check out Chrome's sculpts; he's a pretty mean hand with GS (personally, I'm a huge fan of his Thunderwolf conversion... I completely and unabashedly ripped off his idea). If he's willing to do commisions, you'd be hard pressed to do better.

There was a girl on these forums a while ago who did a winged boar that was pretty incredible, and I think she mentioned it was a commission. I don't remember her name, but I'm sure if you searched the forums for "winged boar" you'd find her. There are a couple of others; these forum is rife with disgustingly talented people.

Thank you both for your suggestions! I don't seem to be able to find this "Chrome" person though, at least not one with a Thunderwolf conversion. Is he on coolminiornot? I can't seem to find a personal website either. :/

Here's the Thunderwolf Prophecy is talking about as well, not a complete scratch build but I've only used the juggernaught to bulk it up with.

I think you will be looking at around $300 mark for a 28/30mm sculpt. Depends on detail and additional stuff I guess. I think a rough guide to what some charge is $10 per mm. A top sculptor will likely charge more.
