Contest idea

I had the idea of creating a contest with 4 different categories to be done at on the 1st of every month. The winner would be the person who has the highest average vote from the one submission in each category.

Categories:
Sci-Fi
Historical
Fantasy
Green/terrain/large scale

The idea would be to diversify what people paint and egg some of slower painters onto at least 1 a month. Feel free to steal and implement this idea. It is for the good of the community I think.

If you didn\'t finish a category you would score a zero and that would significantly bring down your average. But if you get three 10\'s and a 0 you still average 7.5 which is better than what my average of 4 minis would be.

Are you suggesting each person do 4 minis in a month, including one they sculpt themselves?
Time too short, and I have zilch in sculpting skills and don\'t own any historicals, so at best I\'d get 2, with my average of my current posts being about 7, that would make my score 3.5, which is not too nice to look at.
Don\'t think it would work.
For one thing, sculpting is a totally different skill from painting so 2 suggestions to modify the idea:
Extend the time - 4 months for 4 minis. Compromise, 2 months = 2minis/month.
Divide by 3 instead of 4 - Take the average of the entrant\'s best 3 scores. That way if you suck at sculpting you don\'t get penalized but if you\'re good at it you benefit. You could still require entrants to submit something in each category but not scare people off.

clever....

I do like the idea of anything that would \"egg\" me on to paint faster and more diverse subjects...

Just a but tweaking and it may be a very fun event.

But, how could we keep people focused enough to follow through?

(thinking of the VA marine or the more recent round robin ideas)

Interesting idea but I think that will take too much time for most people. Especially with other competitions going on as well. Choosing one of them per period would be better.

Anyway, I don\'t think that greens, terrains and large scale figures should be in the same class since the disciplines are different.

Actually, another idea which is being used in other places too. Themed competition with a set duration where entries are put in a gallery. For instance for painting:

week 1: weary warriors
week 3: use five colours only
week 5: sensibly dressed women
week 7: wild west.
etc. That\'s something that would keep the pressure on. Figureines_ fr does this though they use periods of a month (and three months for sculpting).

Or go without themes but just dedicated galleries: painting, sculpting, etc. Close, vote and open a new gallery every two weeks or so.

The premise would be to paint one per month, each month dedicated to a separate category.

The fourth category would be scenery/greens/large scale objects exactly becuase they require different skills and none of them is simply painting a mini. So vince can\'t sculpt (neither can I), then he probably woulnd\'t submit a green. He might choose to do scenery or a tank or bust. The fourth one is like an open category for something other than just a another mini. If people are too hectic you could spread it out over a full year - 1 due per quarter.
and supervike - People stay interested 2 ways - get excited or get bigtime goodies. By the way, I thought round robin was working well - just taking time. I think if all the participants in the round robin mini threw in $10 from the start and preprinted/prepaid shipping labels for next day air were ordered instead of normal post people would be a lot more interested. Also if they were started in winter when people don\'t normally go on vacation they would also probably be done by now.

week 5: sensibly dressed women, I thought undressed was much more sensible :)
lol Well, you have to built in a level of difficulty. If not in painting then in locating them. :)
