Converting Legs

Okay, here\'s the sitch.

I\'ve made one attempt at a standing guardian to a sitting one.
It\'s for THIS WIP thread.

Cutting the knees and using a bit of GS was just not enough.

I was wanting to know how top go about taking a standing guardian and make him into a crotch-rocket rider, without making his leg amour look dumb.

I know that I\'ll be cutting out the kneepad, and cutting off the section beneath, the question is how do I get the GS(GreenStuff) to look like bent cloth and not squished putty?

I\'ve looked for a good sculpting article, but the only ones that I can find are for whole models, or big sections of cloth material.

Here is a pic of what I am planning, and what I think I\'m supposed to do.
Any and all comments and suggestions, especially advice and picture examples is greatly welcome and appreciated.

Starting with this:


I need to have his knees bent, but I can do that part. I know I\'ll pin him and bend the wire, but I\'m a visual learner, and I need to see what to do to make small, very small cloth-like folds at the joint.

why folds? It looks like they have a body suit on under that armor.

or if you need to, put a ribbed rubber joint in there (robby the robot arms...)

I think for this purpose you might want to consider resculpting the upper legs completely.

I think if you can avoid this you should - with the way the armour looks I think this would be attached to the shin armour so when the leg is bent it should stand up.

Well my first thought was simply \"Practice!\" Try a few attempts (even during a single hardening phase!), use different tools to work the putty.

After you\'ve put the pin in place and gotten the bend in the leg right I don\'t think it\'ll be that difficult - just a simple soft fold could be just right. Maybe have a look at wetsuit photos to give inspiration?

Yeah, looking at your proposed cut lines there, don\'t cut the knee under the kneecap plate, but over top if you\'re going that route.

For the puttying you can push a bit of putty in the gap there, then take a tool with some water (or vaseline or whatever lubricant you like) and sculpt in some details using reference of people in body suits on the web for example, to see how the material looks when bending at the knee in that manner.

One thing about the internet, there\'s no shortage of reference images of people in tight fitting clothing in various postures. Just a tip though, when googling for \"latex body suit leg bending sitting riding\" make sure you have safe-search definately turned \"on\" lol

I think some reference images of those rocket bike riders in their leather suits on those racing bikes would be a good search for reference as well.

Have a look at the Dire Avenger on the cover of the Eldar Codex. Hmm not the current one, probably 3rd edition? Anyway, the Dire Avenger ihas a bent knee and that might help to visualise where to slice and dice. You might want to ditch the knee plate totally and make a new one with a blob of putty.

I see what ya\'ll are saying.

I think that the knee pad is actually closer to the shin guard, so I might have to keep it there.
As for sculpting practice.
I can sculpt GREAT!!, as long as it is about plum sized or larger.
I\'ve gone through almost 5 lbs of (yellow and blue make) Green stuff., The best I can do is fill a mold inconsistency. BUT! I know that if I can see it done, I can emulate.
And that was what I was hoping to see.

That\'s what practice is for.

Details on a 120mm figure I found tough to do back when I began sculpting, I can now do - better - on a 54!

Ignoring my eyes giving out as I get older I\'m frankly amazed at how much my detail ability has progressed given how hard I found things to do early on, and it was because of lack of practice. I\'m not talking about trying something a few times (unless that\'s enough, in which case great) I\'m talking about trying and trying and comparing results across many attempts. One of the things that helped when I made the leap to 1/32 scale was just doing lots of stuff - I sculpted over 50 heads, back to back; did nothing else for a couple of months. Little can beat that kind of hands-on work to teach your fingers how to do stuff.

What sculpting tools do you use? Made a big difference to me when I moved up from doing most stuff with cocktail sticks, although they still have their place.

@Einion~ I get what you\'re saying. I don\'t suppose you saw the whole 5lbs of GS part?
As far as tools~ I have a set of spatule/sculpting tools (for clay), a two sided tool that matches 2 of the sculpting tools only smaller, Hobby/carving knives, cocktail sticks, a couple of bent paperclips with handles...LOL.

I\'m just real skittish from my 5lbs of wasted GS. I just need something to look at and sort of follow. I can deviate if I can emulate.

I\'ve been doing well for years cannibalizing kits. I\'ve just never liked working with GS, it hasn\'t \"clicked\" yet I guess.
