cool photoshop or not

Hi everyone. I have started to see a problem looming over us and what makes me sad is it has something to do with one of my favorite apps; Photoshop!. The other day I was looking at the Miniature mentor website and saw that they are going to be making a new DVD specifically about said app and they say its going to cover everything from fixing poor shots to complete miniature makeover. The problem I forsee is that some less experienced painters are gonna be able to use PS to make their mini\'s look amazing... I know I could! I have been a graphic designer for 20 years and use PS everyday and know that with a little time I could take a photo of a unprimered mini and paint it entirely in photoshop. My point is, is anyone else worried about this and what can CMON do about it?

this rears its head occasionally. it could be a concern but i think it depends on the reason for altering an image - if its purely for score and to convince yourself your a good painter then you are just kidding youreself. if its done to get a higher sale price then thats not so good. I know shawn rl uses photoshop sometimes but he always states very clearly he has done so.

How is this a new problem? Photoshop has been around for 20 years...

I would suggest that anyone good enough with Photoshop to be creating a digital paintjob of a figure that scores highly here would be more likely to be touting their talents on DeviantArt, CGTalk or the like.

People post pics of painted minis because they like painting minis.

Yeah there\'s not much to gain from Photoshopping minis. If you try to auction them, you get nailed for misrepresenting the product. If you try to do commission work, people see the real product and you lose your cred in a hurry.

I\'ve seen it done before in similar threads, hell I\'ve done it before to see how a model would look with totally different color schemes. I know most people who would be willing to try this aren\'t good enough to get away with it, and I\'m curious to see how good a forgery someone with real talent/experience with the program could be.

But to answer your question, no I\'m not worried about it.

well i recently used it on a pic, but only to make 4 pictures fit into one post dimensions wise, as well as take out an icky distracting background, not touch up the picture at all. Would that be considered a problem? I also stated in the post that i used it and what its intentions were...

I use it to adjust contrast and brighness.

Once I took out a dust bunny on a base that I missed (oh, the shame....)

What really bothers me is when people use outer glows and cheesy backgrounds. Its sad to see those on models that are painted well. In most cases they actually detract from the model.

Color correction methods like adjusting the levels are fine, as long as you get them to reflect what you truely feel the model looks like in person.

Agreed. I find textured backgrounds very distracting often... and if the edge is choppy or pixelated it just makes the thing look rubbish!

Also agree; \'enhancement\' is very hard to sell as anything other than a bit of a cheat.

I\'m shite with the bloody program..
Peple using it don\'t worry me at all why should they?? the reasons stated above misrepresentation and kiddig themselves pretty much sum it up..

people will always try and bend the rules wherever scores are involved.. the only way to totally get rid of it would be to drop scoring alltogether.

I am happy that just about evry commission or ebay piece I have done the customer has had a pleasant surprise when they compare the mini in the flesh . I\'d much rather this than the other way round.

Ditto. I remember a thread years ago (I\'m too lazy to try and dig it up), where a guy with great photoshop skills totally photoshopped a mini as an example of how you could entirely colour-up a mini using this program, and make it look close to a mini that\'s really been painted. You can always tell though. And like darklord said, you\'re only kidding yourself if you want to cheat to gain high scores.

I don\'t think it will effect here or miniature painters who are good. As with all cheaters in life they are found out at some stage.

And they are only cheating themselves out of actually learning how to paint and the enjoyment they will receive on completing a mini or figuring out a new technique.

PS is a good tool becuase after taking a picture of a mini the colors and cotrast can go way down, but if you just do some PS it will boost the colors and contrast back up again.
for that reason its good
