Hey there!

I started out as a singlemini painter doing hours and hours painting details that noone couldnt see unless you knew it was there. After a while i started painting up armies for warhammer and quickly figured out that my style was no-good for this scale of project. I had to re-train myself to paint large mobs of orcs and such and it wasnt easy at first. Now i consider myself more of an army-painter than singlemodel painter, tho i can switch at times but after being used painting batches of models i cant really spend as much time on one model anymore without getting frustrated lol.. Anyways..

Been thinking alot about how people vote on models here on CMON and theres really no fair system for people who like to share pics of their units they play with.

First of all theres the fact that you have to use more time painting more models so you cant in a set period of time make as cool paintjob on 10 models compared to one. Speaks for itself. So a equally good job gets less points just because the standard on a single model of those 10 is less than the one supercool model that someone painted up.

But! What if there was a section for people who want to showcase their army/armies? I know i would want one. Do you?

Discuss!

some people have put the time in on units to get them all to a high standard.

check out brokenblade\'s ultra marine hq section. bloody fantastic it is. then there is alexi z with her fellowship.

have you seen manumillitary\'s high quality units, nice:cool:

it\'s not about time spent, it\'s about quality and wether people like it or not.
photography is important as well, as that is what people are viewing, not the actual minis themself.

put them up any way, balls to the score. it can be annoying but a lot of people would like to see them any way.

As much as I want to be a single mini type painter of quality I just can\'t break my army painter habits. As far as army painting goes I figure I\'m pretty darn good at it and I think voters recognize this when they look at units and such. I\'ve posted single minis from a unit and had them come out in the low 6s, then I\'ve reposted the same mini with the unit it came from and had the voting move up to the 7s. The best example of this for me is my Mordheim Marienburger Warband (keep in mind that I painted these 7 years ago and they have seen a lot of tabletop action), each of them came out in the 5s on their own but when combined came up to the 7.1 they are now.

So, I guess what I\'m saying is... It seems to me that many voters do take into consideration the differences between army painting and single mini painting when voting on units and such. I know I do.

I agree with Wideen, kinda. You aren\'t likely to get a high score for a nicely painted unit, unless you really go to town. But just having nice looking units is the main aim of some hobbyists, which isn\'t likely to be appreciated on CMON. Which is what I found out when my beloved undead army got rated in the sixes!

It would be nice to have recognition for having a gaming army painted, without having it sat alongside Golden Demon winners! The comparison is never going to be flattering :D

I\'ll admit that I\'m usually a bit more generous with voting when you see someone has managed to paint up an entire unit (providing they\'re not completely rubbish:D). This is mainly because I admire anyone who is disciplined enough to sit down and paint that many minis to a reasonable/good standard as I tend to get bored or put off half way through my first. Also, average minis can look much better when they are ranked together and I am also marking on how well they all fit together as well as the individual paint jobs.

...but that\'s just the way I think, others may differ ;)

Hubbabubba (I think) has just posted a unit of scouts up to CMoN, they were active in the WIP thread aswell beforehand. i rated the mini\'s about 8-8.5 but gave an extra point, just because he had sat it out and painted an entire squad to a high standard.

Unless your painting an army at golden demon standards, its not going to score high. If its table top quality, its going to rank table top no matter if its 1 figure or 100.

High end units can easy score 8-9 or better on CMON if the time is put into it and the photography is good. But just because its a large amount of figures does not mean it will rate a higher score and it shouldn\'t.
