guys, during a bored session, i noticed how our website is not mentioned in wikipedia. Would a coolmini page be possible, with an explanation of its traditions (freak bar, mop boy etc) an intro to the moderators and the admins, as well as some links to the site..

what do you think guys? lame or game?

Certainly interesting :p
Maybe we could all contribute a paragraph or something (As I don\'t know how to do pages on there)

One problem is that Wikipedia normally requires some references, and published work, which I think is lacking from other sites. Some newspaper article talking about how the site came to be, etc.

Still, couldn\'t hurt to try.

well, i believe there are several games day and golden daemon winners on this site, also several references to the games / miniatures on here could be used

I think it is a very interesting idea. There are World of Warcraft guilds on wikipedia so I bet putting the site on there wouldnt be that hard

I assume at least a few individuals on here have been published in mags / articles

If the owners of the site feel it\'s worthwhile it should be up to them to create the page.

Wikipedia is the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. The Wikimedia Foundation encourages anyone to log or or just stop by to contribute to the articles found on the various projects including but not limited to Wikipedia, Wikiquotes, etc.

There are some things to consider. Only registered members can start new articles. An article that does not pass a few criteria is prone to get speedily deleted.

One of the key things is notability which is established via reliable third party resources that give real world context for the subject of the article.

An example for CMoN would be what has CMoN done to be recognized by the world, or at least its industry?

Has CMoN won any awards that are given out by the industry to show it as important.

Without some substantial context for notability, and resources there is a good chance than an article on CMoN could get speedily deleted as just an article on a fansite.

Any wishing to participate and include an article about CMoN to wikipedia are advised to visit Wikipedia:NOTABILITY and read up on some area that they think would best fit CMoN under. I would suggest Toys and games but there are numerous ones to choose to find the Notability guidelines to try to fit the article that is wanted.

Key thiings that may or may not help is including notable people such as anyone in the industry that may have found there start on CMoN. Peter Lee comes to mind and is not even mentioned in the D&D minis wiki article, nor has a page there.

So feel free to start an article for CoolMiniOrNot and if lucky it will survive speedy deletion with proper context in the article to give CMoN a reason to exist in an encyclopedia.

Finding information to show notability is one of the harder things, but not always impossible.

And I think we should find that notability first. Anybody got a news article about CMON? Maybe some published site statistics for it being the largest fan-supported mini site? Or second? Third?

Given that articles can be edited - would it be possible to mention CMoN in other articles?

Such as wargaming, miniatures, golden demon, etc etc etc?

The owners of CMON actually can\'t add an article, due to one of the rules of Wikipedia: You can\'t self-reference. It\'s sort of a stupid rule, because it means if an article about you or something you own is incorrect, you\'re not allowed to correct it since a self-reference isn\'t considered a valid reference.

Given the questionable notability of other things mentioned on Wikipedia, I\'d be surprised if CMON didn\'t already qualify for an article. I mean, it\'s the biggest online gallery of minis? Some might say the biggest mini-painting site. The problem is just providing references and getting around the \"self-reference\" problem.

That\'s easy! Someone just make a blog-post about it! ;)

@darklord: Hey, any publicity is good publicity! Or so they say...

Sorry. It\'s because of the redirection I left in the other forum. Forgot about the bug, won\'t do that again.

I wouldn\'t title it CMON or Coolminiornot...........how often does someone go looking for those two terms? Do something about MINI\'s, WARGAMING, PEWTER FIGURES, TABLE TOP GAMING etc..... THEN put info and links to CMON.

MUCH more likely to get a lot of traffic that way....IMHO

I would Title it CoolMiniOrNot like the official name of the site and then a redirect page can be created from CMoN to take readers directly to the article.

CMoN is mentioned as an external link for two articles on miniature painting already on Wikipedia, but does not have its own article.

ENWorld, that started as a fansite for D&D and developed to become some sort of industry related RPG site has an article on WP, so it isn\'t that far fetched that CMoN should have one since it is linked externally from two existing articles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figure_painting_(hobby)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_figure_(gaming)

are the two articles now that have CMoN listed as external links.

Sadly Chern could not add the article as self-published articles are not allowed. FranK Mentzer has updated his own article a few times and been complained about for it when he added that his wife\'s bakery was closing or something, and several other people as well that try to edit their own personal articles for validity. Silly rule, but it tries to prevent things such as self-promotion and such.

Find this history of CMoN and figure out links form places other than blogs, but things like news sites and such or industry sites and there will be the notability handled, then just adding info and referencing it will be all that is left.

The Eavy Metal team members that were early members here may be a good starting point to find information from.

We\'d just need a news article with them saying, or it stating, that they got their start here. We could build from that.
