Core Units

Hi guys i\'m new to WHFB and i\'m thinking of an orc or high elf army - leaning more towards a high elf army and as i don\'t want to throw $100\'s at them and lose motivation as they all sit there, what are some core units that i can begin with and then build upon to eventually put together say a 1000pt army?

Your core units are either High Elf Spearmen (which get to fight in an extra rank if I recall correctly),High Elf Archers And Athel Loren Seaguard (who come equipped with bows and spears)

I don\'t have the book to hand, but I believe the minimum unit size is 10 models

HEy thanks, but i think you might have got more of a \' what are the core units of HE\' as opposed to \'what is a basic contingent of units that you build your army around\'

I mean ultimately i\'m doing this because i want to paint a HE army, their colours and models appeal to me, but that said i don\'t want to have 5 HE lords riding dragons totalling 20k points and be unable to play a game...

sorry, mi mistake, I must have got confused when you asked \'\'what are some core units that i can begin with\'\' lol

I have never played with a HE army, but have been on the receiving end of several. All have had Athel Loren seaguard in them, as they are really versatile troops. All have also contained 2 bolthrowers and all have either had swordmasters or white lions in- great weapons that always strike first is harsh!

When building my armies I always stick in my core choices first (ie- units I am forced to take by the force organisation chart).

In a high elf army you can take one LESS core choice than other armies (so you only need to take 1+ in 1000pts and not 2+) and you get to take more special choices.

hpoe this has been useful

As dave mentioned High Elves get more special and rare choices than the other armies and can take less core choices.

I have a high elf army, approx 4k points depending how i work it.

But whether 2,3 or 4k i generally base it around the same stuff.

I have a 16strong sea guard unit, 12 archers, a lord in a small unit of 5 dragon princes (gets bigger with more points) 15 swordmasters, 15white lion led by korhil, 15 pheonix guard led by caradryan 2 repeater bolt throwers.

Then i give and take with units such as silver helms, lion chariot, more cores depending what i am playing. Also have a few mages, usually two lower level or as the points increase a lord and hero level, or teclis for magic storm.

when i bought the army though i bought all the models i liked and then chucked in some i thought i would need :p
