Couple of Reapers: Ronin, Red Wizard

Been swinging back into a Reaper mode lately, as well as a NMM mode. Seems like I alternate between metallics and NMM, and each time I bounce back to the other, I improve my technique by teeny, weeny, tiny bit.

Anyway, first there\'s Eredain, Wizard whom I painted up like a Red Wizard of Thay (from D&D: Forgotten Realms).

Votin\' goodness can be done right here.

Then there\'s Toshiro, Male Ronin, whom I went a little crazy on. I\'m very happy with the red and the NMM. I also was originally planning to have Enma Ai from Jigoku Shoujo as the girl staring into the raging sea, but those sorts of details at this scale would be silly (she\'s just under 5mm head to toe).

Voting happiness for Tanshiro can can be found here.

Thanks! :D

Wow, love Toshiro! The red is just gorgeous, and the freehand is fantastic. I think the hair reflections are also very cool. I think your paint job on Eredain is very good (great eyes, in particular), but it\'s never been my favourite sculpt and there\'s nothing that jumps out at me the way Toshiro does. The woodgrain on Eredain\'s weapon looks great, and I like his base a lot.

i had a realy long look at tanshiro.

nice work, especialy the sword.
a brief run down on the sword process would be appreciated:D

the glare spots on the hair i found to be to big and strong as it dominates the hair and loses the effect. (check out jenovas stuff for good examples of this effect)

the freehand is realy nice but i found the ocean scene on the back to much.
to me it doesn\'t look like it should be there. that\'s just down to my own taste tho and many others wil undoughtably love it.

again, that sword rocks:cool::D

Lessee...

The red:

Basecoated with black, then VMC #859 Cadmium Maroon with black, then just the maroon, then GW Scab Red mixed with maroon, then just the Scab Red, then GW Blood Red mixed with Scab Red, then just Blood Red. A thin layer of Vallejo Transparent Red over everything, then a light glaze of VMC #908 Carmine Red over midtone areas, then a glaze of Blood Red over highlighted areas, then a very very thin glaze of the Transparent Red to tie it together.

Sounds a lot of steps, but the key is really the Transparent Red which ties things together pretty well. The Carmine Red is so subtle it might be unnecessary, but it\'s what added the slight \"silky\" look to it.

The sword:

Again with a black basecoat, then glazed on layers of GW Shadow Grey, leaving it darker at the base of the sword than the tip. Then I mixed in a little VMC #918 Ivory to the Shadow Grey and \"streaked\" it on as highlights, washed the brush off, then used the wet brush to smooth the streaks. Rinse, repeat, each time adding a little more ivory. Final highlights were pure white, added to just the hot spots.

The base is just green stuff which I pressed into a brick pattern. I think you\'re right about the hair highlights... took them a little too far on the back side. Think the front side looks fine, though.

Thanks for the comments. :)

This is great stuff Kep. No comments on how to improve. The free hand on the second one is sensational.

Great stuff did the vote thing.

I really like those freehanded waves.
If I\'m correct you had inspiration from that famous japanese painter, the one who painted the Fujimori and the Tsunami.
Is that right?

Yes, the swords are really great, and the freehand work.

Voted, I gave a 9, as the hair is a little rushed, but only a little. Great work.

It was inspired by a tsunami image by Katsushika Hokusai. I didn\'t really do it justice, though. :)
