Been trying to find for the past few hours the thread, or the picture, or whatever of someone showing a nice cracked paint effect he had done with some special paint, but i can\'t find it anywhere... anyone has a clue what i\'m talking about?

its basically you paint something white, then add this and it makes it look like the paint is cracked.

There are a number of mediums for creating craquelure or a cracked paint effect, available from art and craft sources.

search the sticky thread for giganticdark and read his WIP thread on painting the space marine. I think there is another thread on the subject there as well otherwise it should be there if you search for post by giganticdark on crackle medium.

You should have searched for crackled instead of cracked I guess. ;)

didnt even know crackled was a word... and that\'s exactly the example i had in mind, thanks alot.

And thanks everyone who answered...

One thing though be sure to pick a medium that makes an \"egg shell\" crackle and not a verticle/horizontal one. As the other one is commonly used for ageing furniture, I think, it will probably be the stuff you get if you ask at a craft store.

What you\'re looking for is a product called crackelure. It\'s a 2 part product that cracks when it dries.

I picked up some stuff called Fragile Crackle at my local Michael\'s for about $6. It creates very tiny cracks, but it\'s a tempermental product. It doesn\'t always give consistent cracks, and they are so small you have to really push the contrast of your painting to make them show up on pics. Also you need to be careful, or you\'ll fill in the cracks with paint.

i second that. i have had no luck with mine at all!

I\'ve had some varied success, half the time they were so minute you needed a magnifier to see them, I think it worked best with a heavy application as I recall

I\'ll triple that as well.
Completely stuffed up a mini so badly that it was deposited into the Dettol.

Does the Vallejo stuff mention anything about painting over it when it\'s still damp or only barely dry? You can get a simple crackle effect by just painting over a coat of PVA glue but if it\'s too dry you can get no result at all.

And this is obviously a bit of a problem for us, coat thickness is generally very important with a one-part product - the thicker the better for a pronounced crack. Thin coats, which we\'d all naturally go for, will tend to produce cracks that are very fine.

The Vallejo crackle medium worked for me but I had to give it a heavy apllication and it was done on a flat surface. I brushed some mig pigment over it once it was dry, this made the cracks more visible.

crackle is a very fickle product and is hard to get consistent cracks out of. I have had some great looking models after using it and I have had some go back in line for getting stripped. the only thing I have learned is thicker s better but with small scale models like 40k and fantasy thicker isn\'t always a good idea... test test is all I can say.
