Do you have a specific kind in mind (one-step or two-step)?

Googling for crackle medium and UK is a good start for online suppliers, but searching for a brand and the exact product name would be better if you're looking for something specific.

i have only actually tried vallejo, the rest i have seen all require really thick coats that would look terrible at our scale

Well other than the one that giganticdark used to great effect in his SBS, I bought some One Step Crackle medium from DecoArt on holiday to try and it works great.

The effect is more pronounced the thicker you go but even a thin coat gives cracks that can be accented with a wash or glaze, with the advantage that each 'cell' is smaller too. This might be impossible to get in the UK though.

Hi, I use "GOLDEN gel mediums crackle paste". I found it in an arts and craft store in london (Cass Art I think). To adjust the crack width you adjust the thickness of paste that you apply. The thicker the paste the deeper (obviously) and wider the cracks become.

I highly reccomend a product called "Fragile Crackle." It's easy to find here in the US- you might have to order it online to get it in the UK... I don't know. It produces much finer lines than traditional crackle medium which are bette suited for the scale of most minis.

Sorry, it's an American product; thought you'd recognise it from the DecoArt name. It might be available in the UK somewhere that stocks the Americana paint line, just don't know.

Getting it from someone in the US shouldn't be hard - most any Michael's is likely to have it - although there are a number of alternative things that are available in the UK that might be cheaper and faster to try first.

craquelure-

I just purchased some of this stuff and it was a pain to get it from the UK.

I noticed in a wip I saw a few months back (space marine mini of some sort). It was used over the skull on the marines shoulder and turned out looking really good. This stuff is a two step deal. You put on a milky white PVA glue-type substance, let it dry they apply a think latex-like substance.

That being said, I have followed the directions two times, no cracks. I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I am experimenting with a thicker coat...Any feedback with this specific product would be cool.

I'm using a different brand called Fragile Crackle, but I apply it by painting on 2 thin layers of Part 1, letting them dry completely between coats. Then I paint on a think layer of Part 2. Once it dries completely I take some black ink and paint over the area, being sure to work it into the cracks with the brush, then I immediately wipe away the excess with a soft, clean cloth so that the ink only stays in the cracks.

I'll look up what i used for my Marine (pics are down though, grrrrr) that worked pretty well using the thin or thick layer approach. I bought it from a Belgian webshop I believe, dead cheap and good quality. And I'm sure that if you ebay for 'crackle medium' that you'll find some good stuff too. the trick is, with whatever you buy, to first try a couple of times on a piece of cardboard to get a feel for the required thickness.
