Crazy?

Hey Everyone!

Well, this could turn into a long post...maybe not :p

I started collecting back in about 93(?) - And I've tried my hand at alot, Dark Angels & Tyranids in 40K, Lizard Army in Warhammer, Nercomunda, Gorka Morka (think thats how it was spelt), Bloodbowl, Epic, Space Hulk, Heroquest etc etc..Lets just say I've been around the block - Up until about 2000, when I generally lost interest..

Well, earlier this year, I finally got the urge to paint again. Not gaming this time, just painting, so had a look in our local shop - Came out with some...surprise surprise...Space Marines, that I took home, and wondered about. Finally painted them DA colours, and sat back thinking..what next?

I've been down the Space Marine route - Great to quickly paint (table top standard) and then play with, but I find them "routine" (that make sense?). This time I wanted something Crazy and fun.

So, I figured - How about Orcs & Goblins - Nothing gets crazier than them! They aren't routine or repetitive (unless you just keep them all basic - I plan to get creative!), and have been looking round for some information, or inspiration maybe.

One thing that did strike me, was the lack of "snow" themed armies, and figured - huh, why not? I've seen a few Dwarven Snow armies, so why not Goblins too? Night Goblins, but without their Robes painted black (too boring in my mind..something more chilly for example - maybe lightning Blue?), I mean the Trolls could stay blue as they are! lol I have images of the goblins trying to set fire to themselves to warm up!

I'm pretty much here just asking if anyone has any ideas they wouldn't mind sharing, colour schemes, what in your eyes is the best Goblin / Orc Models, or even if someone else out there has a Snow-Themed goblin Army they wouldn't mind sharing a few pictures of to get my mind going!

Any help would be apprieciated!

Also - Hope this is in the right section!

Oh, you were so close to kicking the addiction! Well, since you're back, I'll try to help. I'm not big on greenskins (although speed freaks are gaining my interest fast the last little while), so I don't have any links for you BUT I do have a suggestion, CMON!

We've got reference pictures a plenty here. Have you tried doing a 40k Orks and/or Goblins search? Looking through the fantasy Orcs could be helpful too. Lots of the submissions have links to the posters blog/website with more info, if you find something you like, many are also quite helpful if you send them a private message.

Also, you might get more help in the more active "Painting and Conversions" section.

This section is more about "gaming" than "painting"...and very few people read the posts here.

"goblins trying to set fire to themselves to warm up!"

I like this idea. I can see the whole "we're out of wood...lets use Fred" scenario going down followed by confusion that juicy Fred doesn't keep a flame all that well.

One thing that pops to mind is something very crystalline. Lot's of ice crystals, maybe even making icy protrusions from the skin, sort of like they've been frozen and they are popping out from underneath. Could decorate with lots of frozen/crystallized things. You could make an emerald army, amethyst, ruby, etc, bringing in lots of different colors and such.

Or, you could dress 'em all up in furry robes, and have lots of browns and blacks, maybe with certain details picked out in brighter colors.

Anyway, just what popped out of my noggin first.

Heh, thanks for the replies guys! I have a few images in my head of what I want to achieve... Guess posting in the wrong section didn't help! I'll try again in the painting section. Thanks again guys!

Couple ideas. One, which works for any kind of themed army, I guess, is trolls wielding chariots as catapults (I made mine from extra bits). Also helped that I liked to switch out what they were between games (Is it a catapult, is it a troll, it's both!).

Another is that GW flying bases can make for excellent ice and clear crystal bits. They can be cut and shaped like normal sprue, are relatively cheap for the amount of material, and can make a nice bit of extra scenery if your not going to paint 3d jewel effects. Clear plasticard and rod might be cheaper now since GW went to a smaller package size since the time when I did it.
