Creating cracked wasteland terrain.

I swear I saw an article or thread on here about making a desert wasteland terrain.. with like cracked earth. Or like the dried up pond look. Am I imagining this?

Dunno but you can try the stuff for filling gaps and holes on house\'s walls. Looks muddy and naturally cracks once dry

I remind it happening into my walls, :cussing: it was called \"aguaplast\" and it\'s sort of a liquid white plaster.


Then maybe you add some texture with another putty (or mix in sand from the start)

Cracked cork also comes to mind.

I\'m sure there IS an article on it - and I BELIEVE the guy used a CD case:

He cut around the base over the case, creating a circle of plastic the right size.

Then, he simply placed the plastic in a wrapping (To keep it together) and smacked it several times into pieces.

As it was covered, the pieces kept in roughly the same place, and he simply glued these to the base in a mosaic fashion, but keeping small gaps for the cracks...

I can\'t find the article either but DaN is correct - CD cases were the subject of the demonstration. I haven\'t tried it yet either but the article was good and made it look easy.

I tend to lay down Greenstuff and just score it with a sharp knife..Lifting pieces up occasionally helps add to the effect..

Thats an awseome idea, now once all my CD cases are covered with paint, I can smash them, AND use them pieces!

How did it turn out...?
(I had an extra idea - to first put the case on something soft, like plasticine or something, so that when you smash it, hopefully it will keep in roughtly the same position)

no not yet! I\'m working on painting a some wasteland orcs, and a fire mage...

I haven\'t decided which will the cracked terrain for a base... we\'ll see!

You could just use cork then freehand the cracks.

There are faux finish spray paints available that crack when drying. I think they call \'em \"crackle glazes\" or something. I think you could pour a small sheet of plaster onto a sheet of plastic, let it dry and then wrinkle the sheet to crack the plaster, similar to the CD case technique. Then just glue down the chunks where you want them.

Tried busting a CD today. Put it in a t-shirt and smashed it with the butt of my knife. I ended up with one big crack down the middle, then hit it again and again.

Eventually, I got large breaks in the CD case, that sorta fanned out... like a shocked wavce effect through the ground (in a fan shape).

So I cracked off 3 big chunks, and then manually broke off tineir pieces... needless to say, some of the cohesion of the pieces was lost, as it becomes a mini jigsaw puzzle everytime I accidently screwed something up. I\'ll prime and take a pic sometime to see if I can save it...

Perhaps making a sheet of GS and just cutting it with a knife is easier...

Use a crackle medium, its the most effective and easiest to do. Heres an example of what it can look like..

This was done for something else, not craked earth, but you should get the idea.

easy as pie

just take some white glue (this glue mainly used to glue wood i think), dilute it with water and mix it with sand until you\'ve got a fluid with the consistency of semolina pudding (the word sounds really strange, but that\'s what dict.leo.org gave me for \"grieß\") and apply it to the area you want. let it dry over the night and the next morning you\'ll have your results.

Had my same problem when I tried the CD idea a while back - Have a look at my Nork Deddog WIP in the WIP section - I eventually got P*ssed off and did the base with plaster o paris
