CremeFriche SDE WIP Thread

Hello everyone! I'm Mike, aka CremeFraiche! No, I'm not French, just an avid South Park viewer! Anyways, my best friend has the whole collection of all the SDE minis, and well... I'm his painter! Ill update this post to be a journal of my progress and completion of the miniatures. Today, I'll be posting a Fungal Growth that I have finished. (Most of my already completed ones are at my friends house and so I'll need to pick them up for some pictures).

I'm a huge fan of the Createx paints and Vallejo paints. Any questions about anything I do, please, feel free to ask! I'll be glad to answer any and all questions!

Anyways, Lets begin:

Here you can see I primed the two Fungal Growths white. Nothing fancy here. However, if you look at the caps of the mushrooms we have some insane iridescence going on. Using Createx Iridescent Paint, mixed with some pearls, and using a pearl as a base, I was able to create a "Beetle Carapace/Oil Slick" coloration... which is what I was aiming for, for these particular minis.
I like to see my work in both inside lighting, as well as outdoor lighting... especially since I LOVE USING PAINT EFFECTS!!!

The body of the mushrooms are a copper pearl/gold pearl and Vallejo brown mixture, with a final copper pearl dry brush accent. Doing the spots on the cap are a base of lime green pearl, with iridescent green, and final layer of iridescent yellow. You can compare the two caps, and see some of the coloration I was aiming for.

Tree is painted here, using Vallejo brown and a dry brush of copper pearl for a shimmer. The top of the tree, eyes, and mouth are in pearl gold Figure these might be some magical trees here, so wanted a shimmer for anything that might be inside the bark. Eyes are done on the mushrooms as well.

Crystals! In the future posts, you will see other crystals I have done. I get a lot of compliments on how they come out. Enjoy the basing of the crystals and ground sections of the model. Also more details on the mushrooms:

Welcome to the forums! Looking good so far. One thing I would suggest is doing some thin washes on the tree. It will help give a darkness to the recesses and bring out any texture to the wood.

So today at work, I brought a few minis to paint. (my job has A LOT of downtime, so allows me to do things like this)

I managed to paint The Forgotten King with *some* inspiration from the card art. Still think it needs a few more things, but I'm not sure.

Base Coat with multiple layers of thinned black

Some highlighting to get some nice points on the cloth

Finished some highlight points

***forgot to take other pics of progress***

***insert (possibly) finished Forgotten King.
According to the card art, he is holding something very bright and is supposed to glow... I tried to achieve this... let me know!

Right on! I wish I had a job where I could paint during downtime haha.
The OSL is pretty good. However, I think you would want to go brighter at the source of the light. Like drop some white in his palm and then glaze over that with your green.

I painted at work for a bit, and then my boss saw me, and he decided that I should be paid to just sit and stare at the ceiling rather then be paid to paint during my down time. :p I also agree with Octavian about the OSL, there needs to be a range from extremes. Looking forward to see how you tackle it.

Dang you did all these at work today? Holy mole!! Lol. Nice work; they're all looking real nice. I think you could benefit from taking the shadows darker and the highlights higher. Doing so will really make the figures pop and give them some nice contrast for the game board.

This is my first time doing OSL

Reference Card with Mini:

Welcome to the forum. At first I was struggling to see it as OSL until you showed the reference card. Your osl matches with the card very well. Since the mini misses the wisp of smoke from the hand that was the source of the osl lighting I was confused. For the crystal on the staff, you will note that the reference card takes some of the bright spots to nearly white. You may want to do the same on the mini.

Overall you are getting good progress on the slew of minis to make the game more enjoyable. Those mushroom dudes make me smile when I ser them.

Some warmachine paints i've done. The Stormwall, I took a weathering strategy where you paint the rust effects, hairspray it, paint you real paint scheme, then take a qtip dabbed in alcohol and scratch away the top layer to show weathering rust... thought it came out pretty cool.

I like the color scheme for the Dragon blade. You could try going up a couple more highlight stages. Thin your paints down way more and work in the highlights in a few thin coats. The thin paints will help eliminate the hard edged transitions.
