Hello!

Finally getting around to taking and posting some pics of the August competitions, GenCon and Baltimore.

First up is Gil-Galad. I liked the pose a lot and it had some nice flat spaces for freehand while keeping enough detail to be visually interesting. I looked at a lot of pics of the few scenes in the LoTR movies and used that for inspiration.

Was great to see this in person. I know only 22 votes are in when I post this, but how can this be sittin at a 7.5? Who would vote something with expert levels of freehand and NMM so low? Anyways, don't wanna start a debate... I think it's a solid 9+, so I gave it a deserved ten; fantastic work Zach and can't wait to see some pics of your WH single entry!

Ugly face (sculpt not paint) & looks as though he's leaning on his spear-sword but the haft doesn't touch the floor? Certainly doesn't look like a combat ready pose to me. I like the red vines & the fern on the base but not the lichen. None of the quite small pics show the entire model (including plinth).

Another 8 from me, technically accomplished but leaves me cold.

Did he place Zach?

Who cares if I'm not too keen anyhow, plenty of LotR fans who are blown away by it I'm sure. Good work :good:

Fair enough, BPI Forgot some people might not like the actual sculpt of the model. Some of the LotR models are terrible, like the Haldir with sword model I painted awhile back >< Also I forget I've seen it in person, while others can only judge based on the pics. Anyways, I still think it's great!

Hi guys, thanks for all the kind words Jeff! I can understand why you wouldn't like the face, it was very hard to get it to not look like Bill Clinton, haha. As far as the pose, I think there is a series of the LotR elves that model a scene from the movie where they're holding their weapons up like this before bringing them down in a synchronized motion on the advancing orcs. I think part of the problem is the angle I've used and the fact that my photography isn't very good, but maybe that's just me making myself feel better, haha.

He didn't place, was one of the last few as I understand but the category was stuffed with great models and came in behind Alexi, Jeff and Kyle, all of whom had great entries.

With the lichen, I was attempting to model small bushes or tufts of undergrowth but it's not entirely convincing, I'll have to rethink that.
