You do realize that the painting competition was at a WARGAMES convention. Wargamers want to use their hundreds of models on the battlefield. Part of the hobby is using the models. Many of the models in the competition would look front and center stupid on a battlefield, but are awesome display pieces. I thought it was hillarous that a unit could be mounted on one base(a diorama) but not be in the diorama category. Looks great, what can you use it for? Taking up space and catching dust.

I am not sure what type of cameras you guys use, but if it's on a tripod you set it up once with max depth of field and shoot. Then you zoom verify the picture. You can see overexposure. If you want angles, put it on a turn table.

By my calculations, 7x20+6 is 146 entries in 12 categories.

Maybe, but then again, if you're going to spend 20-50 hours working on a single model or group of models, you may not want to stick them on a battlefield where some ignorant gamer is going to bounce dice off them, knock them over, and scratch up the paintjob trying to get his unpainted spiky metal model into base-to-base. What can you use it for? Maybe nothing, but it looks damned good in the display case.

If you just want your minis for display, there are much nicer options than plastic gaming bases for displaying them.
