CT's WIP Thread

Life's too busy for me to keep up with multiple WIP threads like I used to, so I'm consolidating.

First up is a montage that shows the Grey Knight Paladins I finished with custom lava bases.

This is a WIP shot of a knight I'm doing as a TT commission for a gamer friend of mine. He's playing a warrior in the Dragon Age RPG pen & paper game I'm DMing. Trantum is the character's name and he wrecks everything with his 2-handed sword.

As proof that I'm still alive and painting, I present some of my most recent work.

First is a TT commission I'm doing for a buddy in my gaming group. The sculpt is from Reaper and the figure itself is pretty unforgivable- proportions are all over the place and his face is terrible. But, I didn't pick the mini and, since he's a good friend and I know the character he's using this mini for in our Pathfinder game, I didn't have any problems painting him.

This guy was an unintentional speed job- painting itself was less than 2 hours, not counting drying time for quick shade or glue or anything. I think the painting turned out good and even managed to redeem the scuplt a little.

I went crazy on the base- wanted something that would really look awesome on the table, but I also needed to find some way to make him fit on a base. The base he's on is a 1" round base form Rackham before they went under. I used the shield because it was the only way to keep his sword from hanging in mid air... that and it looks cool.

Doing another IMperial Guard commission for the same client as the others. Nothing special here, just another TT job. Enjoyed doing them, though. Here's a small selection.

Been working on a few pieces for myself now that my last commission is out of the way. My gaming group is starting up a Pathfinder campaign and I'm playing a Magus with a twist- took some mounted combat feats and his horse is his familiar. It'll be interesting to play and I'm really looking forward to it. So, I needed 2 versions of my character- 1 on foot and the other mounted.

I converted this Dark Sword high elf warrior by sculpting some flames onto the sword and his outstretched hand. Really gave it the look I was going for. Flames turned out pretty well, too. Since this is just a gaming piece I didn't want to bother with OSL from the flames.

For the mounted version I found the most decent looking knight I could find from Reaper, which was actually pretty hard. I chose Reaper because they're at a LHS- didn't want to order anything and then have to wait for him to come in. I'm pleased with it for the most part. The tack along the horse's flanks was the worst sculpted part of all, but the rest of the figure was solid. I used the horse painting tutorial on CMON as a starting point but ended up going a completely different direction in technique.

My current project: Grimgore Ironhide. I've had him for a long time, but his armor used to be red. I'm watching the Metallic Metals tutorial from Miniature Mentor and this is my follow-along project. So far I've just applied the initial base metallic and highlights, and then glazed over with some inks. I've still got a lot more shading to do on the armor, but it's getting a very nice, dirty patina that fits this orc well. Can't wait to see what he looks like finished.

There was some overrun of the metals onto the skin. That will be fixed later.

It's been a long time since I last painted anything. Participation in WAMP's speed painting challenge was the only thing that got me to pick up a brush again. Just had a new baby girl, so time has been limited.

For the challenge I painted the Raccoon Thief from Dark Sword Miniatures. Whole thing was painted in just under 4 hours.

I tried something interesting with the armor to get a different leather look. All washes are a 1:1 mix of wash and water.
-Calthan Brown base
-A couple of Baal Red washes
-Devlan Mud wash
-Thraka Green washes in shadows
-Babab Black wash in deepest shadows
-1:1 Calthan Brown and VMC Deck tan mixed into a glaze for highlights
-Pure Deck Tan glaze for the reflection point

The cloak started with my airbrush and then went to hand painting because the airbrush crapped out. Need to figure out what's wrong with it.
Cloak:
-Basecoat black
-very dark mix of Adeptus Battlegrey and black
-More mixes of Adeptus Battlegrey and black moving up to pure Adeptus for highlights
-Brightest areas are Codex Grey

Just to prove that I still paint, here's another one.

This is for a Champion's game I'm going to start playing this Thursday- my Character is modeled after a Biotic from Mass Effect, so I decided to paint up someone who looks like they're from ME. I didn't do any of the conversions I had planned- no time to do them- so I just added a barrel to the gun of this Reaper Nova soldier (Chronoscope) and painted him up.

I took some artistic liberties with the armor stripe- it's supposed to be on the right arm according to ME lore, but I put it on the left to balance out the details of the figure, since the gun would have obscured it from the front. He's just a TT piece, but I'm happy with him.

Nice work on the most recent piece! I love the armor stripe. Though, the shoulder pad looks a little unfinished? Or is that weathering maybe? Hard to tell from the pic. I only mention it because that is the main focal point where the eye is drawn when viewing from the side, and it looks a little "blotchy".

Metal effects very nicely done for TT standard!

What's that gold stripe on the base?

Champions... possibly my favorite RPG of all time. Been years, though it brings back the memories! Thanks for sharing! :)

I gave the armor stripe a liberal wash with Babab Black to make it look worn, like the rest of the armor. That's why it isn't crisp- it's not supposed to be.

The yellow stripe is a yellow road line- I painted the base to look like broken asphalt.

The mobile painting station has been getting a lot of work lately. I've been using it to work on minis over most of my lunch breaks, so I thought I'd show off the multiple concurrent projects I have.

First up, is a sale project. I bought the Island of Blood box a while ago to paint up for sale on ebay. I am close to finishing the Sword Master of Hoeth squad:

As you can see, I still have a bit left to do. I am really proud of how the banner turned out.

I also run a Pathfinder game for my gaming group. In our last session the party was ambushed by some griffon riders. Due to the amazing quick thinking of the party's Erudite, they captured the 2 griffons and the Crusader has tamed them. Because of that, I've started working on the griffon I got from Bones 1:

I'm also working on the Bones paladin with the flaming sword. He represents the character I was playing in our 1-off 13th Age adventure. I wanted to do a saffron orange, but my color is a bit off. Also, my camera apparently HATES orange as it is not that red, nor that badly blended in real life.

bflamepaladin1.jpg

Corproea- if you're around, mind telling me the recipe you used for the saffron orange on your Bones orcs?

Finally, I'm working on painting up parts of the translucent green ghost wall:

I'm using the brand new bone color triad from the new paint set from Bones 1. I'm not sure if I'm happy with the way the skeletons look. Something seems off and I can't tell what it is.

Finished blocking in the primary colors on the bird part of the griffon last night. Finishing up the feathers is going to be a challenging process as there will be a lot of color transitions to make everything work together. I found an excellent image of a golden eagle that I'm using as a reference. In some cases individual feathers are going to have multiple transitions of golden browns and ending with a white edge around the tip of the feather.

The beak and claws are also going to have a lot done to them as they will ultimately have a black marble appearance to match my source image.

A mini update on the Griffon. I got him to a state where I felt comfortable fielding him for last night's game. Still a lot to be done, but he's coming along quite nicely.

I'm going to be glazing some blue on the beak to tint the white, matching the source image I'm working from. There are a ton of other tiny things that have to be painted... like every single feather to some degree, but I'm looking forward to the work.

Um, your lion looks like an eagle or maybe it's the other way around :p Love it so far, especially the flower flock.

Thanks- the flower tufts are from Army Painter.

I'm trying to decide if I need to push the shadows in the lion fur deeper.

You could always split the difference and add a few very sparse highlights in ivory and then see if you need to go any darker.

Some quick pics from my tablet of my current super-secret project.

It's going to be a christmas gift for my brother-in-law, who is a huge ECU fan (he graduated from there). I'm going to paint the pirate in the same colors as the mascot.

This is just the first stage of sculpting the water- I'm going to get a little more rolling wave motion into it, then I will be painting the water and layering on some water effects to get it to look great. Ultimately I will be using a mix of water effects and white paint to create the foam spray of the waves.

Very nice! I did something similar a while back with apoxie sculpt and liquitex heavy gloss gel on a test wave. I will be watching this with great interest for a similar vignette I have in mind for an old school Ragnar Balckmane on a rocky coastline.
