CT's WIP Thread

It's been a really busy week, but I've been able to squeeze in some more painintg.

First up is a continuation of my pirate diorama. I finished sculpting the base of the waves, painted them up, and put down the first layer of water effects. It's going to take a few more layers to get the look I want... not to mention what I'll have to do to make the white foam on the waves.

Here is the basecoated pirate mini for the dio. I'm painting him in the school colors of ECU- this project is a gift for my brother-in-law. He's an alumnus of ECU and a fanatic for their football team.

I've also started yet another gift project. I have a cousin who has been a part of my D&D group a few times. Each time he has played an archer, so I'm painting him up the elf archer from Dark Sword miniatures.

I wanted to do something really different and came up with an idea I call the Autumn Hunter. I've painted up his cloak to be autumn camo and will be painting the rest of him in a similar palette.

Did some more work on the ocean cliff base. I haven't decided on the foam/breakers. from some angles they look really good, but from others it doesn't look nearly as good. I'm wondering if I should just do a thin coat of water effects over them, or are they good enough as they are?

I've also been testing out some colors on the autumn hunter, trying to decide what I want. I like the ochre tunic, so I'm going to smooth out the blending on that. The undershirt is going to change from grey to a light green. I'm still not sure what color to do the pants.

Water looks great, some small areas of churning foam in some of the flat areas might help, but not too much. The pants would work well as maroon or a very very very pale green.

Thanks for all your comments, Zab!

Crazy time with the recent passage of Thanksgiving followed by a seriou cold that ran through my entire family. I've finally been able to work on some more minis and take pics.

First up is the finished water for the ECU Pirate. I added another coat of water effects, which really took care of most of hte problems I had with the creamy looking breakers.

Next will be finishing the pirate himself, along with some decorations for the rock.

Last week my Pathfinder party I DM for discovered a strange sight- an abandoned hunting lodge filled with Ettins and Ogres who were living an oddly civilized life. They discovered a black dragon was ruling these giantish oafs and was using them to try to carve out his own little province. So, here's the black dragon- this is a VERY WIP pic- he may have died to the party, but the mini is far from finished.

There's a lot more I want to do with him... I think I alreay said that.

In the next session the party is going to be facing, among other things, a summoned earth elemental. I'm painting up the excellent sculpt from Reaper's Bones 1.

You can see where there are a few finished stones, but most of him is still very unfinished. He just finished drying from the brown oil wash I applied. I've got a lot more rock effects to paint, as well as all of the crystals. He's also going to have uncut gems for eyes- a ruby and an emerald.

I'm also trying to think of what I want to do to base him. I'm thinking about doing a flagstone floor with glyphs carved around the edge, indicatng a summoning circle. His right fist will be pounded into the floor, which will have splintered under his blow. That's my first thought, anyway.

It's been quite a while since I've posted anything. Currently I'm working on a commission where I'm painting up 64 ships from the Trafalgar naval battle. Just sent images of my test piece to my customer- will post after he approves.

Currently I'm also working on my entry for WAMP's Synthesis contest- kind of like a kitbash.

This idea is a spectral figure gliding through the aftermath of a battle. A lot more will be added to the base.

Took a break from my current commission to start working on the innkeeper from the first Bones kickstarter.

He owns the kind of bar adventurers visit, which means you have to either be brave, foolish, or desperate to eat there.

I'm building up texture on the apron along with giving it a good layer of grime. I've still got a lot of lines to blend into the apron to blend everything together so it looks like texture instead of random streaks. Same thing with the splotches of color for the grime. I'm also going to change the color of the rag he's using to wipe down the mug. At first I was thinking I could differentiate a dirty white rag from the apron, but these pictures prove me wrong.

I only had a short time to paint tonight, so I did a little more work on this fellow. Decided that I didn't like the red on the shirt, so I'm going a different direction with that. Also did a little more blending on the apron to fade the stains and fix some issues from the initial splattering/griming.

I'm working a little more color into the figure by going with a red rag. Started basing the hair- going for a greying look on him that will be built up over time.

Been doing most of my painting in front of the tv at night using my mobile painting station. The real detail work will have to be done at my real painting desk under proper lamps. Awful lighting in the tv room.

More work again tonight.

On my way home I picked up a couple of repositionable LED daylight lamps that I'm testing out on my mobile painting station. They helped a great deal. Now I just have to decide how I want to permanently mount and wire them up. But that's another project for another day.

I did a lot of work on the skin, face, hair, and then some more general work. He's slowly getting closer to completion.

I noticed some odd areas on the side of his face and side of his right leg. Instead of worrying about them I decided to make them look like scars. He had to have been an adventurer once, right? Why else would he open a tavern?

I'll be finishing up the barkeeper soon, so I went ahead and prepared the miniatures for my next project. They're not going to be part of a single diorama or anything- I just wanted to paint the Pathfinder Red Dragon along with finishing all of my Bones townspeople.

All of these minis were treated for directional lighting and I'll be using some speed painting techniques from one of the Miniature Mentor videos to try to get really good results quickly.
