Curiosity about CMON made me blind

Just to mention, I would imagine that most people only upload pics of their best figures too - so the voting WOULD be more up the favourable end...

Maybe that accounts for it partially...

I was always curious why the rating system is the way it is.

Who\'s going to go through the trouble to photograph and post an horribly painted miniature? Most people post table top quality or better. I think the scale should be more nuanced.

1 = Poor
2 = Table top quality
3
4 = Good job
5
6 = Great job
7
8 = Near Perfect
9
10 = Divine

Or something along those lines.

The only problem I see is a learning curve for new visitors on what the ratings mean. But I think we would get a better feel for how our peers evaluate our work. The data seems to support this revised rating system.

The other problem would be a programatic one. How do you divy up the original votes to fit into the new paradigm? It\'s late and the problem seems complex to me (though I\'m sure it\'s just my body wanting to sleep).

I also think that would have been a better way to do things, but it\'s impossible to correct now, with over 100,000 minis already uploaded and scored according to the current system.

I think that is the way the voting is heading anyway - I think 5s these days are a lot better than they were and many are better than tabletop (at least many of the tables I\'ve gamed at!).

But then again, its coolminiornot ;)

I wouldn\'t be surprised if people use this type of ranking subconciously anyway

Well I\'m glad everyone is enjoying the stats! It makes the 4-5 hours doing it feel worth something. :eek:

Cool stats, and thanks for doing it!

Don\'t be depressed when I tell you that about 5 minutes and a few SQL queries against the database can produce the same information.... but it implies you have query access to the database, which I\'m guessing you don\'t.

Reason for the skewing on the bell curve

I thinkthe reason for a higher proportion of people 6.5+ is cause a lot of the time, the better painters have that confidence level (ie. we aren\'t going to shoot ourselves if we get a bad rating on our work), we are willing to show photos, discuss, show WIPs, etc.

A lot of people who aren\'t as good won\'t (I know examples of such) and thus there are less people from the 3.5 to 5.5 region.

Just a thought.

My average on my 10 models in gallery comes to: 7.23 (6.98 from registered voteres), so that puts me in the good job range, which I expected :)

...but nothing unexpected. A short while ago I was in the \"great job\" range, but I\'ve expereieced a nasty drop :(

:no: I think I\'ve received more stick than I deserved for that. 8.4 was perhaps too high, but I think Castor could scrape an 8.0. Now, for some mysterious reason, he\'s down to 7.6 and as for my other minis... :( After all this, I\'ve dropped 400 places in the rankings and I\'m now as low as I was with my first 5 minis posted :(

I think you are dead on with this....there could be many reasons why we don\'t see very low scores, but this is probably it, it is not that the scoring is skewed, its just that those minis most likely don\'t get shown...

By the time an artist takes the effort to paint a few, and learns to photograph, their skill level may already be higher than a 1-3.

I think also people who put therefirst figure up and end up below 4 don\'t bother putting any more up.
A lot of other painters who start at the 6-7 region continue using the site ask for help and improve as they go leading to the community of cmoners naturally shifting their painting higher...
All in all a healthy sign the site is doing it\'s job

I agree that if you paint something and it\'s crap, you\'ll know it\'s crap, and you\'re not going to show the world that you paint like crap. I had only painted a few figures when I stumbled onto cmon, and I\'ve been hooked ever since. I learned so much in such a short time about what a good paintjob really is, that I instantly dipped all of my old minis into acetone. It\'s not like they were horrible, I would say that they were 5\'s, but I didn\'t want to keep something that I knew I could improve upon. Thus, you will never see a mini posted by me titled \"my first mini.\" Maybe, \"my first mini that I was pleased enough with to post\" but that would be rediculous. I\'m really not here for the numbers, I\'m here for the learning experience. Maybe someday I\'ll get a digital camera and post some minis...
