Curse gw!!

I just painted up about 30 Chaos Marines, was all happy that I finally finished them, take them to my garage and spray them all with my brand-new can of GW Matte Varnish (some of you can probably guess what happens next..)

Now they look like they were snowed on, or lightly dusted with white spray paint!! and yes, I did actually use Matte Varnish, not spray paint *Sigh*

More sleepless nights for me!

I know others have had this problem, what's the most damage you've done?

I'm pretty sure that this issue has a solution and it is in the Painting and conversions Forums.

If you can afford to risk one of the marines then try re-spraying with a BETTER varnish and see if that clears the dusty effect.

You don't happen to have a chilly and moist kind of air in your garage do you? That's something that'll happen with most varnishes when exposed to humidity. This is very common, not just with GW varnish. Best way to fight it: don't spray/let them dry where it's cold and/or damp.

This is one reason it's advisable to always test varnish prior to using directly on the finished product.

If the problem's not too bad - basically just a 'dusty' surface - a coat of gloss varnish can solve it.

chrome's hit the nail on the head cold damp air, i would use my garage for spray painting too i always use an old table with a table top patio heaterto keep things nice and warm advantage, you get a better finish with a bit of heat and they dry quicker

i read somewhere that if you give the models a light going over with a hair dryer it gets rid of the snowing, iv never tryed it though so id practice it on just a single model first.

same thing happened to me, except on a much smaller scale. Spent about 40 hours on a single mini to have that shit happen, to say the least...i was upset. i bought a dull coat varnish from a hobby store and applied it over my model and it neutralized that dusty/snow effect. good luck

I've had this happen to me with any type of GW purity seal in any condition. I have no trouble with any other spray - just the GW stuff. I refuse to use it.

It can be that you used it outside the optimal distance - because this crap tends to dry before it hits the model really quickly because of the compound used in it. I really hate this stuff - GW need to update the formula. It is so temperamental.

AND WE HAVE A WINNER.

Purity Seal, 'Ardcoat, whatever they are marketing this month. They've had quality issues for the last 20 years and cannot seem to work them out.

Half the quantity at 5 times the price of a decent matt varnish or matt laquer.

yep same thing happens to me when i use gw sealant, spray or even their glue. great paints... crap everything else when it comes to modeling supplies. use dullcoat and you will never have that problem again. on a side note, if you get a toothbrush and lightly brush over the "white" area you should be able to get the film to go away. just do it slowly and carefully.

hope this helps.
