Custom Sculpted Bases (or basing bits) - what do people want?

What started as me simply saying, \"hey, wow, I did something new and it was fun,\" has quickly become, \"jumpin\' Jesus on a pogo-stick... I really enjoy this and people seem to want it!\"

So I\'m going to try my hand at more custom sculpted bases. I have four new pieces sitting on my worktable:
  • 40mm round damaged road with rubble and metal pylons
  • 28mm round cobblestone and manhole cover
  • 28mm round cobblestone
  • 28mm square cobblestone

I also have requests for:
  • bases with lots of spent rounds/ammo shells
  • damaged roadway, cement, etc.
  • bases with blood or water

I can\'t really sculpt the blood/water though and have sent those folks to the articles on using clear resin and water effects.

My question at this point -- what do folks out there want to see in terms of sculpted bases? What sizes? What details? Round or square?

I\'m having a *lot* of fun sculpting and molding these and will stick with it for awhile.

So speak up, let me know what you\'d want if you could have it done your way. If I can do it this could be your chance to get the base you\'ve always wanted super duper cheap!

Personnally I\'d prefer buying bitz and pieces to add to bases. Things like you mentionned : manholes covers, pylons, cobblestone sections, shells, etc... and MAKE my own base.

If somebody gets around making smbitz like that for a good price, I\'d be waiting in line.

Pre-made bases make me kind of sad... Making a funky base is a big part of the fun of converting and modelling :) Why buy it!

I have a real problem when it comes to basing. Haven\'t used a pre-made one yet, but I think that might be a realistic way to base my models decently, as my basing is worse than my painting...

I would really like to see some decent bases for fantasy models, esp. 20mm as most I see being sold are either forest, or lava ones. Icey bases, and ones with pillars etc. are very nice, as well as cobblestones which are always handy, esp. for GW Empire models.

Good luck and good start mj :)

@Silverthorn: Noted. I\'ll see what I can do for you. Any requests in terms of basing bits you\'d like to see in a hurry?

@James: thanks for the link. They have some great stuff! Only one or two I\'d use myself but very well sculpted.

As for why folks would buy bases -- I think Ogrebane hit it when he said most folks are too lazy. That includes me. I\'ve thought about buying bases several times... and until I got on to my current kick, and started having fun basing, had really planned on doing just that.

I figure I\'m going to be doing this anyway, for my own gratification, and if I can sculpt something someone else may want -- and thus let them be lazy -- I\'m all for it. I\'m just having fun sculpting bases at the moment and like the suggestions and requests I\'ve gotten. Gives me more ideas to play with.

We\'ve some 40 odd packs available in all sizes and shapes.

Hi-Jacking other peoples threads is a sin... Hi-Jacking other peoples threads to promote your own stuff is death sentance...

I suggest not doing this again...

It\'s got nothing to do with lazyness, it\'s actually fairly simple:

You buy a moulded miniature, that looks great with great detail, why not buy a moulded base to go with it? It\'s not cheating in any way..

I got two more molded and cast. Still learning as I go so both of these represent different techniques. I also have two more ready to mold... only I ran out of silicone because when I got in to this I didn\'t expect to make more than one or two molds. I\'m having way too much fun.

Street scene - 40mm (added another bullet hole to the painted one)

Small rock - 25mm

@Dark Seraphim: I don\'t think we need to worry about multiple hijacks from nexusgames -- this thread it post 1/1.

@Ogrebane: I\'ll use that to make my first two part mold once I get some more silicone. PM me with a couple of examples of what you like and I\'ll see what inspiration I can find.

Hopefully the companies producing for folks like us are paying attention. If six companies suddenly release a whole range of basing bits I certainly won\'t cry about it.

I love the first one! Looks so awesome! Can\'t belive it\'s that easy?! :D

The second one however, something is wrong, don\'t know if it\'s the rocks or the stuff in between... or the paintjob <ducks for flying chairs> but other than that, it\'s crazy :D

Keep them coming, I\'d love to see more! Do some ruined temple...stuff....thingy.... oooh, and lava crack...thingymabob....

I like both bases mj. I think what\'s wrong with the 2nd is there are too many rocks, too close. The first one is a beauty :)

Edit: Are you thinking of doing 20mm squares as well?

Apologies for the hijack, shouldn\'t be spoiling your fun.

Your bases look good so far. Your brickwork ones very nice and I do really quite like the effect you have going there, quite different to the cobblestone/flagged bases out there already.

Basing bits are a great idea, I\'ve played around with it a little in the past and was bouncing ideas of Jed at Antenociti\'s Workshop when I caught up with him at Salute. Eventually it came down to the process being too fiddly with the at casting process. If you could get some masters made up and have them spin cast in metal then it would be great package them up with all the extras (sand, static grass etc) and price them below GW\'s new base pack you\'d be on a real winner.

You mentioned people were interested water or blood on bases. Instead of trying to sculpt it directly, you could just leave a channel or other dpression for people to pour resin into to make a puddle, for example.

Thank you all for the feedback and input. I\'ve got yet more bases ready to go but, unfortunately, my plastics shop is closed today. Poop.

@markstorch: great idea!

@nexusgames: glad to see a second post. No worries on the hijack - your feedback is greatly appreciated. Especially with the great bases you offer I\'m very flattered to get praise on one of my pieces.

@peacekeeper: I\'d like to do this but 1) I\'m not so good at sculpting bodies (See the Scibor line for some good stuff!) and 2) the armor/weapons I\'d want to use are protected property.

@drizzt: I could do some 20mm but hadn\'t really planned on going below 25mm. I\'ll poke around with some ideas though -- I\'m having enough fun that I\'ll try just about anything.

@Meridian: given the great work that nexusgames and groundforge have done I don\'t know that I\'ll bother with a lava base.

@Dark Seraphim: Thanks for the praise. I\'m pretty happy with the first one and plan on doing more \"street\" bases. No ducking for cover needed on the second; I know my painting isn\'t stellar in general and was just slopped on to this thing so I could get a photo up. Once you have a couple under your fantastic minis..........

@DS and Drizzt: Rocks too close together? Hmm. I\'ll try a couple more ideas. I was keeping the rocks close together along one edge to make attaching a mini easier. I\'ll see what else I can come up with.

@Meridian: I tried to email you but it got bounced back.

Email my user name @gmail.com if you\'d like to reach me with questions.

In fact.......

@nexusgames: I\'d like to chat about basing if you don\'t mind. Please drop me an email.
