Custom SM Chapter

Hi everybody!!! Yes this is my first post here at CMON. Hope to improve my painting skills by joining this site.

I am interested in 40k and have been playing for 3 months, though I have done some painting beforehand.

This is my custom SM chapter, Heralds of the Storm. The termie is pretty much done, the base needs doing though. The captain (who I gave a beret ) is part done. I have finished his cloak, tabard, armour and power sword. Some feedback would be great.

There\'s some pics!

Captain not finished yet (haven\'t got enough paints atm) but you get the general idea.

What do you think of the captain (and possibly the terminator) and what colour do you think I should paint the captain\'s beret, banner etc.?

Is it my imagination, or did you sculpt a beret onto the captains head?
The scheme reminds me a bit of the Night Lords CSM\'s, pretty cool!

Yep, I sculpted a beret !!! I was dissapointed with the lack of detail on his hair (it was just flat really) so I used some gs and gave him a beret, as you can see.

looks good, never seen a beret on a SM before Are you going to attempt doing the chapter logo as a badge on the beret?

Maybe a bit too complicated for the beret.
Any ideas for the colour of the beret? (and also the badge)

UPDATE:

Sword is now finished. Boltgun is also complete. I haven\'t painted a name on the boltgun on the parchment piece - I tried but I can\'t paint that small . The beret has been painted with enchanted blue and ice blue. Gold areas are finished too.

Backpack needs to be painted and so does the nbanner. Ideas for the banner colour scheme would be appreciated.

As usual, comments and criticisms welcome.

Just a quick update. Redid the cloak by doing a black wash folowed by layers of mechrite red with decreasing amounts of chaos black in them, then layers of mechrite red with increasing amounts of golden yellow mixed in.

I think it gives the model a bit more definition.

I also gave the beret a wash of asurmen blue to darken it slightly.

Thoughts and tips would be great.

hehe we all know how annoying that is! lol

The red of the cloak seems a lot brighter and cleaner, however I\'d add a few more levels of highlighting

Is the backpack finished?

I think the lightning (I believe that\'s what the blue stripes are supposed to be) would do well if they had a bit more bright white going down the middle, possibly adding some more branches. Hard to do with such a little space, so maybe just the white.

Okay, I will add some more layers to the cloak, perhaps mixing in some blood red.

No the backpack is not finished yet. What you can see is the first stage of painting it only.

Yes, I will probably add another layer to the lightning but probably not pure white as I think it would ruin the effect. I\'ll probably apply a layer of very pale blue.

Will update as soon as I can but I have lots of homework at the moment.

what i would do for the final layer lightning is get a pool of about 50;50 water: white paint on a pallete or whatever and add just enough ice blue to give it a bluish tinge,... hmm might try that now

Wow, I really like your color scheme for your chapter

Are you going to do all the units like that? How are you going to be able to tell which unit is which - the shoulder pad color?


I really love the blue lining, however i think some of the other parts need some more detail since the eye is driven to the light blue

An update:

ok I have now finished 1 squad of terminators. I know there are some areas to touch up on but I will go back and improve areas once my army is fully painted.

It does need some more work I know. There is also a red tinge to the sword that you can sort of see from the picture

As for highlighting: yes I know this is something that I need to do. But at the moment I haven\'t got a lot of time for painting so I am just trying to get models done. When I have painted the rest of my army I will go back and do highlights where necessary.

I\'ve heard hawk turquoise mixed with chaos black is good for highlighting black (though actually this is a very deep blue) ???

The helmets are done by a layer of ice blue followed by several layers of thinned skull white.

I agree with the prior recommendation of adding more branches and brighter highlights to the lightning. Also, I\'d make it a bit more angular. It looks far too \"squiggly\" right now, more like blue swirls on the armor. See the picture below.
