D&D minis

Cake or Death?
Okay, so I overheard someone at the FLGS say to someone else \"I don\'t know why these guys [the folks with stuff in the case, including yours truly] put so much time into painting when they could just buy D&D minis. They\'re just as good.\"

...

AHHHHHHH!

Exactly! Not that I don\'t love D&D minis - as a DM, they are a huge time-saver. But comparing them to a well-painted metal fig is like comparing a schoolbus (a useful vehicle) to a Ferrari (a beautiful vehicle). I\'m just confounded as to how you can compare them...

Don\'t want to be the one pointing out the obvious...but D&D figs wouldn\'t be included in a Demons compo lol

Maybe Gencon or something? Aye, what foolery! Crazy comment from the geezer. He should have had a custard pie in his face for that!

Why do people paint portraits when a photograph is infinitely more realistic?
Why do people play instruments when recordings of artists already exist?

Lemon meringue tart, with extra lemon.

No, they are even better. They don\'t dent, chip, bend or break when you drop them. You don\'t need special padded cases to carry them. You don\'t have to waste hours painting them when you could be on your PS/2 instead. And mine looks just like yours. Difference is bad. Mediocrity is good.

Banana cream please.

I weep for the children. The children who will have thier minis ready painted....

I\'m not exactly the best painter in the world but my worst attempt is as good as the well done D&D stuff.

Why, why would we paint instead of playing
PS/2 or XBOX360. That\'s stupid, what a waste of time.
Anyway my Oblivion character looks better than your figs, and it took me 15 minutes.

That is a thing with stupid, goal oriented people, they can\'t understand that \'doing\' something can be as enjoyable as getting the \'result\', much more in fact, as you get a feeling of self accomplishment you DON\'T get when you beat the boss in your last 3D game.

It the same for those rich daddy\'s kids that buy themselves complete armies of \'pro-painted\'
figs on Ebay, while it\'s a good thing for the folks who painted them, they really just don\'t get were the spirit of the hobby lies.

Well said Green.

There\'s something that is just so impersonal with plastic minis, I like the weight and feel of the pewter.

For the record, I don\'t even play the games, I just paint the minis.

I guess I\'m one of the people most biased towards D&D Miniatures; I actually find the skirmish game quite enjoyable. (To be honest, I\'ve found it to be the most enjoyable miniature game that I\'ve ever played.)

Some of the sculpts are crappy, especially the older ones. There are others that are quite good; one of my best submissions here is a repainted D&D Miniature at 8.5. ( http://www.coolminiornot.com/105207 )

What I really like is that I am able to carry the majority of my roleplaying needs in a cardboard box and not worry about wear and tear on the figures. I hate putting unpainted figures on a table and I really hate painting a figure quickly -- if I\'m going to paint I want to do the best job I can. The D&D Miniatures are a huge time saver allowing me to concentrate painting time on the important characters like PCs or major villians. There is also a certain \"awe\" factor when the players have been going up against prepainted figures and suddenly round the corner for a fully painted enemy; suddenly everyone at the table gets a bit more serious... ;)

I don\'t think this was a thread against D&D figures.

They\'re neat imho, my best submission yet is a re-painted D&D mini.

It\'s more about some dumb people that consider painting mini as a bore, a necessary step toward owning a painted army and no more.

I think you hit it exactly, Temperance: D&D minis are useful, and extremely so. I have no desire whatsoever to paint 30 lizardmen for a single encounter, or giant frogs for any reason. I hope nobody took this thread as my attempt to bash them...

...cause it won\'t help, sturdy, high impact plastic little beggars :D

I just hate comparing them to well-painted figs as an artistic piece.

Rev..Rev..Rev...you LOVE being the one to point out the obvious.....

As for the statements made at the LGS---I\'ll steal a few lines from Ron White...

Well...if your face is messed up, you can have plastic surgery. If you\'re fat, you can have liposuction. If you\'re bald, you can have hair transplants.....

But you can\'t fix stupid.

Application

One thing that you have to ask also is the application. If I\'m painting figs for table top play they get my table top paint job. D&D figs aren\'t intended to be put on display shelves.
Each has it\'s own place according to its application.

Never seen a WOTC D&D mini, but I\'ve bought the WOTC starwars minis all pre-painted...........then I strip the paint off and do them again properly.

I\'m sorry you can\'t compare the two, I\'m not the best painter in the world, but the paint work on those minis are....well......shit.

The guy who said that probably doesn\'t know what a proper painted mini looks like.

I hate people like that...........where\'s my gun

Well, It\'s easy to understand, since they\'re probably painted by some underfed, underpaid, 8 year old chinese boy under supervision of a Mao portrait telling him to paint faster, else he\'s not deserving of living in the chinese empire.

Got nothing against china, but I\'m pretty sure that\'s how it goes.
