I'm in Manchester in a couple of weeks time, where are you based Tommie? Not on the date of the painting day but If its near to where my wife is going I may be able to pop in for an hour.I'd like to check out your work firsthand if thats okay with you guys? And maybe even do a little bit of painting while I am there!

I can bring all the studio stuff but everything else is long gone. I'm a bit mercenary and flog em all. I'm not a collector.

I was thinking more along the lines of what you might want demonstrating - ie female faces for example then I would make sure to bring a primed female figure to paint etc. etc.

Hi - ok - great.

I'm a newbie painter and my main objective really as far as painting goes is to 'hopefully' come away with an idea of how to smoothly mix and blend, nice subtle muted colours whilst retaining a matt finish. The coat on the widowmaker capitan in your gallery is a really good example for me (as it roughly has a colour scheme close to something i'm thinking of for an upcoming project) So it's developing an appropriate pallete , mixing colours and actually applying paint... and tbh it could actually be anything skin, cloth etc. I would absolutely love to see how you would paint the face of Ar-Fienel, so for me so it would be enough to use to demonstrate all I would need for the day (basically I suppose face and cloth).

Hope that makes sense.

thanks...

EDIT: myself, I'm basically aiming to tackle the cloth and face on this: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat640010a&prodId=prod1250029a

My question would be if transparency is done by painting the underlying surface then highlighting down to the skin tone? or is it more complicated than that....

To be honest i usually just highlight the skin as normal and then use very thin paint glazes to build up the sheer colour of the cloth. Making the colour deeper where it sits in creases and leaving it paler over boobs, thighs etc.

Thanks Fluffy, Ill probably use reference to help me for my first try just to be sure im doing right. The Beauty and Bot seems like a prime choice to try it....

Hey Tommie, just wanted to say thanks for today, great chatting with you and seeing your work up close properly and thanks for the little painting lesson and all the tips!! To everyone attending the event, you should have a great day and I am more than a little jealous! I can attest to the fact that Tommie is a good teacher and I hope to be able to attend to the any future events, in ***cough*** Cornwall lol.

Cheers Tommie

Thank you very much for the day guys, it was very nice to meet four very top class mini painters, (who also happen to be friendly, approachable people, who seem to honestly love talking about painting), the maelstrom venue was fine and personally I came away with exactly what I hoped for.

Get feedback on the mini I brought, advice regarding what I was working on, a demonstration of the techniques I felt I needed, and an opportunity to practice these techniques with one-on-one step by step guidance whilst referring to the tutors top quality completed examples was exactly what I wanted to do on the day and this is what I got. The highest quality and authority of tuition was always beyond doubt and that really made the day.

I'm not surprised that the first two questions at the end were "when's the next one?" and "why not have two days?"

Thanks again - it's really appreciated and well done on a great day.

:)

ps: guys, your work is just awesome, it's great to see it up close, photo's don't do it justice.
