Dark Eldar

My first miniatures for about 5 years. Im looking forward to seeing how much the years have taken there toll once I start painting them, but building was fun!

This guy is pretty standard I guess.

I tried to give the special weapon girl a pose like she had ducked and cut someone's belly. I chopped the powersword off the hand then replaced it with a little dagger blade.

This is the last one I made and I just really started to have a play, adding a fancy trophy rack made of one of the back pieces and lots of weapon blades, and giving her a dagger which I will drip some blood off.

I think a mostly purple colour scheme and Im going to try and do some weathering chipped armour effects.

Photos are really crappy because all my proper cameras take film so I had to use my phone.

Well, I got started painting a 10 man squad of these, along with 5 Hellions and Urien Rakaarth too. I was loving it, having my first play with my airbrush, slapping on a Hull Red basecoat and getting used to the flow. The plan was to use mask on parts to create chipping when I put the coats of proper colour over.

Suddenly a slight spanner in the works - my girlfriend informing me that the compressor vibrating through the floor was horribly loud and giving her a headache. Then a little while later, that the smell of the paint was making her feel sick.

All those stereotypes of the geeky, girlfriendless hobbyist are based on solid, sensible foundations folks!

I now have to wait for her to bugger off out before I can have another play with my airbrush unless I can figure out a way to shut the compressor up and get an extractor for the fumes (which would also need to be quiet). :crying:

This leaves me without much to do on the Dark Eldar, which is a damned shame.

Well, I got round to doing a drawing instead - if I ever get my act together and start sculpting I think it would be a fun one to make. It's meant to be massive. The picture doesn't really sell the scale that well, but there are tiny buildings visible on it's back and in the foreground and stuff.

I remember my dads wife complaining about my GW paints smelling when I was painting inside and that she got such a terrible headache from them that she forbid me to use them inside. I answered with doing as she said but placing an open can under her bed as well.
Two days later I asked her how she felt and when she informed me that the headache was gone now that I was painting outside I showed her the open can under her bed... She got furious but she never said anything when I was painting inside ever again...

That is total ownage!

There's no way I can pull that off though. I can't deny it, the paint smells. It's Tamiya, which means it's alcohol based and has a pretty heavy duty pong to it. Even when I start using other brands the plan is to thin them with a wee bit of isopropynol, so that's going to add some odour to it as well.

I'm sure I'll get something worked out. She's out with friends after work tomorrow, so can get some more coats down and hopefully have them at a stage where the rest is brush work. That was the plan anyway. :)

Also, she cooked a Sunday roast lamb with all the trimmings tonight, so it's not like I can be grumpy. I have a happy full tummy!

Well, it's not what I started out painting, but I like the new Hellions about as much as any models I've ever seen, so just got stuck into painting them and put the warriors towards the back of the workbench.

The brushwork will hopefully become more refined with time, but I feel I'm doing ok. Blowing off the cobwebs bit by bit. I seem to have developed greatly in terms of using the right kind of pallete and I think this is probably down to doing a bit of digital painting in my time off from mini painting. Not using black to line things has really worked too I think.

This one's been worked out as a tester, but I have the other 4 boards done with the basic weathering and texturing. Just need to do the metals and blues and add some highlights, then I'll get on with the riders. They are a bit more daunting but if I take one hurdle at a time, hopefully I'll finish them up successfully.

I've gone for a much grubbier, more torn down look than the GW ones, but it seems to be working in my humble opinion. The red markings on the wing are meant to look like they've been daubed in blood and I'll do them slightly differently on each one.

Main question, does anyone have objections to the icy blue for contrast?

Well that's good. I am already above 'Eavy Metal standard! ;)

Didn't get to do any painting last night due to a blinding headache, so if anyone thinks the ice blue isn't working now's the time to say. I'll be doing some work on these later. Also, does anyone think I should add a lighting glow around the blue?
