ok, so i thought after much wandering around the CMON site i should post what i'm working on at the moment.
it's my first attempt at NMM using a tutorial in White Dwarf mag (issue 353), i'm pretty sure my blending needs some work but I've not picked up a paintbrush for a while so hopefully practice makes perfect!

Hey Darkwrath, welcome to the forums!

I've tried getting the hang of NMM myself a while ago, and it's a bit of a pain to learn. It needs to be done almost perfectly before the effect starts to look real. Any mishaps and it just looks weird. This was very demotivating for me. I hope you'll have more patience (or skill :p) than me, and keep on practising.
If you want to learn though, this is definitely the place to be!
I can't really give any tips on how to improve, apart from the blending, which you already said yourself. I'm sure someone else here can help you along the way though.

I love this model btw. It's a Games-Day only model, isn't it?

it is the Games Day only model. it's a nice sculpt, perfect for learning nmm on i think. Thanks for the comments JMR, i'm hoping i can steadily improve my painting as i want to enter Golden demon this year ( a tall order i know ) as you say, this seems to be the place to be if you want to learn!

well the nmm on the armour looks pretty good. although it could be smoother, the highlights seem convincing. so it looks ok as it is. on the large flat parts of the axes though it doesn't look very good. for large areas, you really need to be smooth

Thanks freakinacage, i wasn't really happy with the axe, on the tut there's some freehand work on the axe which obscures where the highlights go so i guess it's time to study how light works on various surfaces and see how i get on. i have a sneaking suspicion that i'm not thinning the paint enough and not putting enough layers on too.

bit of an update. still can't fathom the blending, tried a wash consistency and pushed the painted to where i wanted the strongest colours, also tried getting rid of most of the paint on the brush, almost like a drybrush. still can't seem to get it looking smooth. got a 4:1 mix of water and paint so far. is that enough i wonder?

i think thats a matter of taste. i water down my colours lot more than 4:1 but then it usually takes me more than a month to finish a mini with everyday painting:guitar: but its more than just watering the colours, you also need to develop the techniques into perfection, just practise practise practise and never surrender! ;)
having the right brushes is also pretty important.

Hi Darkwrath, I think you've made things tricky for yourself with the grey-white cloak lining, it looks too close to the metal & the amount of white in it distracts from the nmm highlight spots. The red on the skirt has worked well, just repeat that? Otherwise paint a cloth texture into the cloak to contrast with the ultra smoothness of the metals?

I like the way the helmet is coming out :good:

Cheers, B.
