David's 2012 Chicago GD WIP'S

I noticed many of you have started on your Golden Demon entries for 2012, I have to mention it was very nice to see the minis that many of you brought this year in person at the Chicago GD, congratulations to all who won, it was a great showing this year. Anyways, I got all pumped up to advance my painting skills after the convention, so I have started on my entries for next year.

Here is my plan so far...

1. 40k Squad-Vanguard Ultramarines, a little different style of blue than the eavy metal

Already Started on the squad, pictures to come soon

2. 40k Vehicle- Blood Angels Tank, Freehand all over, well, mostly.

3. Lord of The Rings- don't know which model yet, probably a Helms Deep model

4. Fantasy Single- Vlad Von Carstein, already started, pictures to come soon

5. Diorama- Ork Street scene, named, Breakin Da Law, imagine a small street scene with a Ork nob Biker doing a wheely off the base being chased by a space marine police bike, with orks up to random mischief. Already started on the base, pictures to come today.

Thanks everyone, stay tuned for pictures!

Dude, my advice for what its worth...GD is about quality not quantity so pick 1, max 2 categories and focus on that. For example, if you are going to go with entry 1, Ultramarines, spend the year becoming an ultramarine expert, reading the fluff, searching for a unique and inspiring concept, painting them over and over until you are a master of all things blue :)

Also, build some time into the year to improve/perfect your modelling skills, as the judges seem to like things they havent seen before as oppose straight out the box if you get me?

Good luck and look forward to seeing how you get on!

Thanks for the advice, I will take your advice and dull down to two categories, maybe just keep the freehanded tank as a personal project, The two categories I am going to choose, The Ultramarine squad and the Ork Diorama, Since I've already started on them.

Anyways here are some pictures so far...

Simeon said it best honestly. Plan for one piece, if you get it done AWSOME!!! then go for a second and so forth so on. Also switch too white primer. The reason being is black will actually change the color from it's true look.

Thanks for the tips everyone, here is a update to what I have been working on for GD 2012, This and I diorama if I get the time to do it. Sorry about the bad picture, need a new camera.

Arch! External photo links, the horror, the painnnn. Y'know it's pretty easy to direct links some pics in your posts here. And prettier as well. :)

Good idea for the diorama, looking forward to that.

Hi everyone, I got a little bit of a progress update on my entries for Golden Demon Chicago 2012, but not much.

Here is a picture...

My 1st and probably only entry at this pace is The Sanguinor.

Decided to paint this for Golden Demon sort of by Mistake, started out for skill building, then became more serious. I feel that there
is no turning back now, as I'm too far into it at this point, but I'm starting out to have serious doubts about GD 2012.
I have a couple reasons for this doubt.

1.) There was a Sanguinor entered last year in 40k Single and it won Bronze, (painted brilliantly, I might add)
maybe I could get some guidelines as to what I can really improve on from the painter, personally I think with the
quality of the Sanguinor from last year being so high, there is no place to go to but down.

2.) This is the hardest category (from what I hear) in the comp.

3.) No conversions you can really do to the Sanguinor, plus, my conversion skills are at a low.

I don't know maybe I'm just overthinking it. Please let me know what you think so far, I will highly appreciate it.

Yeah - elly's Sanguinor is a beast. He didn't do it with the intention of entering GD, it just worked out that way. As for 40k single, it is easily the most hotly contested category. Good luck.

The Sanguinor is one of those that really seems to suffer from overexposure; it's been done, and done, and done, and done, so it makes it harder to attract notice. If there were a way to breathe new life into it, you might turn heads, but since it's been a nmm paint job right out of the gate, and the sculpt doesn't lend itself to conversions easily, there really isn't much that can be done for a fresh take on it.

40k Single is definitely the hottest category... of course you could always do a diorama that focuses on the Sanguinor. Might grab some attention that way. ;)

Yep, or add a cloak under the jumpack for great freehand opportunity. Other than that, I have no idea. But I can tell you to expect to see at least 2 other Sanguinors, and possibly one will have NMM. But good luck!

In my experience the category with the highest level of quality is the one I enter, not because I have any skill, but that is just how it feels! I will feel good about an entry until I see mine next to all the other beautiful entries. I have never entered 40K Single, but I imagine it is nerve racking, for all but a few painters.

Another option would be to rethink sanguinor. Do him as a death company version...shiny nmm black, shredded and bloody wings. Gore covered...

The dark sanguinor would be astorath the grim though.

Maybe incorporate the pair of em like an angel devil type scene like in the cartoons......one over each shoulder of fortunate marine!
