DDM Gargantuan Orcus - how to strip and repaint that beast

I just got the mini in the mail. I like the sculpt, but I think I can do a paint job 10 times better.
I've stripped those plastic minis before, but with this one I'm a little nervous. What's the best way to go about it? I'm mostly concerned about the red color. I noticed that in previous attempts to strip red from a DDM mini the color never really came off. I used Acetone. The key is to use something that doesn't destroy the plastic.

You can try Castrol Super Kleen ( Engine de-greaser ) or Simple Green.
Can also try Easy-off , not the odor free one, the regular strength one. Spray it on and either put in a plastic bag or container and let sit.
But first test on another piece. Never tried to strip a D&D mini before.

Catrol's SuperClean (and similar products) or Easy-Off oven cleaner are probably your safest bets with plastic. Acetone is a big risk as it softens or dissolves many plastics.

Hey i had plastic models to strip and i used neat dettol and a little toothbrush worked fantastic. Be sure it is neat do not mix water as the paint becomes like glue also if rinsing with water if becomes sticky just swish about in your dettol solution. Be warned is very strong smelling make sure you are in a ventilated room. Also you must leave in dettol for several hours before you start scrubbing p.s wear gloves cos you will end up with extremely irritated hands my experience, sometimes little tiny bits of paint wont come off but don't worry after you re undercoat you will not even know good luck

You can always try Fairy/Yes Power Spray. It's darn effective.

Stripping it with acetone would sure take bravery :laugh: But it's a pretty foolproof process with some of the other go-to things used in the hobby.

I think simple green is safer for plastics.

I have to do the same thing as I also got the Orcus.

If the Orcus mini is anything like the other pre-painted DDM's I really doubt that most of the suggestions here will work in getting the paint off.

For those that aren't familiar with the pre-painted DDM's, the minis themselves are a much softer plastic than the plastic used, for example, by GW. And the paint is almost bonded to the plastic itself. You can't just rub the paint off these minis like you would a normal painted plastic mini.

So I think the usual options of Simple Green, Dettol, etc, just won't work. I haven't done it personally before (the few I have repainted I just primed and painted over the existing paint scheme) but I have heard of people using acetone with mixed results.

Yeah, the plastic on these things is very rubbery, you can usually bend them quite a bit and they'll just spring right back. It's kind of annoying, actually.
