Yep, in Yemen, the USS Cole.
Although we were not at war at the time and in port.
I was on the USS Princeton, when we hit the mine in the gulf, we had one guy seriously hurt but he survived.

As to the Navy being gay.
You don\'t get the woman in every port rumor from the other branches.
And it ain\'t a rumor.

My Friend is an Ex Ranger, and he would not wish what happened to him happed to anyone else. He\'s been shot 16 times, had countless Surgeries and his left had is paralyzed! But it’s your choice.
My Grandfather was marine and pilot in WWII, his rank when retiring was major (can remember) and my uncle was in the navy.

OK, so I only spent 4 years in the Navy as a Seabee, but from that experience I can tell you this:

A) Not that many gays. Make all the jokes ya want, but it ain\'t so.

B) MOST IMPORTANTLY! While the recruiters aren\'t technically allowed to lie to you, they can omit facts, distort the truth, and present things in the most favorable light for themselves. I would trust a recruiter about as far as I could comfortably spit a rhino. Do like you are doing now, speak to military folk, not recruiters. They just need to meet their quotas.

C) If you are person who is deeply partiotic, devoted to duty, and want to serve your country, feel free to consider the military. If not, DON\'T GO. It won\'t suit you, and you won\'t suit it. This is spoken from experience. I joined to \"get a job\", GI Bill, training, etc., not for the above. It was 4 years of misery.

D) If you choose to go, go Air Force. Especially if your ASVABs are good. They\'ll train you better, treat you better, and you\'ll have a better chance of staying alive.

E) If you want a new job, in a tropical setting, with the opportunity to hit the beaches, do some manual labor, and paint in the evening, let me or TAB know. Tending the lawns of rich people may be hard work at times, but I have yet to be shot at. (and maybe we could get some d&d in...)

Best of luck what ever your decision.

Yeah, Nick, actually, if money is the motivator, dont join. Got to agree with Pitynoman on that one - If you want to give up a lot of freedom and personal choice for a paycheck, and still end up in Iraq, do it as a contractor, not as a member of the military. Not that I am in anyway deriding the military as a choice (3 years as a Junior Jarhead in high school and a stint in the Navy) - but if your only reason for joining is to get a check, that is not the best of reasons, especially now. If on the other hand you have a desire to serve your country and understand that you will probably regaurdless of service branch be spending time in the meat grinder that is Iraq, then I would enlist, after careful consideration of what you want to do after you get out - thats the best way to get a job in the military that has some civilian applications (when I enlisted in the mid 80\'s I could not really forsee a civilian application for what I would have been in the Corps (Machine Gunner) and ended up in the Navy as my second choice).

If you want to go the first route, PM me and I\'ll give you some sites to look at with work info in Iraq.

By the way Itchy, think about your options carefully - it doesn\'t sound like you\'re too keen on wandering the streets of Fallujah with an M16. There are a lot of options out there, make sure you choose the right one.

Oh and if you make a mistake, don\'t worry, we\'ve all done that, and the odds are you\'ll survive.

Want something you can use after a few years of serving your country? Join the Navy or Air Force and get in the technical areas. The computers you work on will either be very single purpose or very outdated. But you\'re getting paid (a little) to get the training.

The air force generally (GENERALLY) has the better living conditions. The navy has highest pay and will let you see more of the world (depending on which MOS and which boat you end up on.) The army probably has the most varied MOS\'s available if you are looking for a certain tech speciallty.

You are exactly right. We can\'t think of that war as only US and GB, many more countries are part of it too, and no one should forget that.

I have the utmost respect for the men and women willing to serve their country. It is a huge committment, and one that should be taken with much consideration.

Being that \'pay\' is the most likely motivator here, I would suggest possibly looking into a civilian job over in Iraq if that is something that catches your attention. There are a ton of them, if you can get the clearance and have the proper skills.

That being said, you\'ll be away from your family for a good long while, you are still in a hostile enviroment, and the conditions aren\'t the most pleasent. The pay is rather good though, and it might open up some other avenues for you.

I would have to be an utter moron to think that any country wouldn\'t have a military... I was just having a poke at most Americans pre-conceptions of Australia thanks to movies and television. If you guys believed everything you saw on TV then you would think you couldn\'t walk outside here in NY without getting shot at. In fact, I went through an entire day last week without having to dodge bullets...

Besides, that would be L.A., and mostly on the freeways... lol

I\'m glad you Navy guys didn\'t get insulted, I was just having some fun with that horrible impression everyone got after the Village People...

Every friggin\' club I went to in a port played that damned song. ARRRRGH.

As for pay once I made E-4 (Petty Officer 3rd Class), I had quite a bit of money in my pockets.
I had sea pay, hazardous duty pay, tax free for being out of the States for 6 months, free meals, free living quarters and no bills.
Couple that with the fact there really isn\'t al ot to spend on when you\'re out at sea, and that most of the countries you visit have exchange rates far below the US dollar. You can actually save quite a bit.

He spent his entire tour in Viet Nam building airstrips and eating shrimp (thank God)
