Death Korps of Krieg Commander

Hi everyone, here is my latest miniature for your viewing pleasure.

A few days ago i was looking through the Ravage Mix Open magazine and thinking what it was that these painters had that made thier models so amazing. The main factor I noticed was they all had a very strong sense of light direction and the use of shading to create immense depth.
So in my quest to better my painting skills and move into the more realistic painting style I decided to ask a few questions.

A few days ago Anders (Ritual) had given an explanation on how light reacts on different surfaces over at World Of Minis. So i thought who better to ask than the fella who knows his stuff!

Then i started PMing Anders with a range of colour theory questions and begun to create an understanding of colour use and tonal depth.

This then became a series of WIPs in which Anders helped explain where to apply colours and which colours to choose.

All shading and shadows are painted and not a trick of my lamp! And iv overcame the intimidation of using black and white for extreme low/high lights (EricJ manages this style expertly)

With all this going on, i decieded to paint a model which really showed the struggle of the 40K universe, the never ending war over pieces of desolate land.

So please enjoy my Death Korps Commander:

And last but not least a HUGE thanks to Anders for his patience and help. A big cheers to Eric Johns (whose stuff i looked at alot whilst painting this) and all the painters who were featured in the Ravage magazine. You all help me push my skills to the next levels.

Wow Matty, I\'m really impressed! The colour scheme and weathering are perfect, the oily metallics really suit this mini :) The base is fantastic too - I really like the dirty snow. Only thing I would improve is perhaps the back of his coat, the highlights look a little stark. Other than that, an amazing piece of work - definitely my favorite from you so far. Your improvement since you joined this site has been staggering, a real pleasure to see. Voted and commented! :drunk:

Cheers

ok i am in love with how you did your dirty ol\' man effect there. its wonderful the gritty effect is realized very well. however i feel as if the dirty snow is detracting from the mini. i dont know what it is but it just seems to detract from it. the rest is great except for that. keep it up matt

cheers

The metal and the cloth needs more highlights... like on the arms and the tail of the coat. It looks like there is camera flash or white highlights used in some sections, either way they should be eliminated.

Im guessing you mean the little bits of glare on the metals? Unfortunately i havn\'t got a super lighting set up for photos, so there is always a little bit of glare on metallics when i take photos. But atleast the glare is where the bright metallics are, so i must be doing something right!

Majority of all the highlighting is taken all the way up to ivory and metallic mediium on the \'hot spots\' so the only way i could brighten them up is increase that area and brighten up the shading. (if you understand what i mean ??? )

Cheers everyone for the comments.

That\'s probably one of the best snow bases I\'ve seen in a while - you can actually believe he\'s been trudging through the slush. The mini itself achieves a great deal of real grittiness too - a nice style you\'ve developed there. Master Ritual has learned you well young Padawan lol You\'d better make it to GDUK this year as your progress definitely deserves an entry (ooer missus) :D

And an entry there will be! Although i have absolutely no idea what to enter, itl probably just be something i have painted before the event, nothing specific though (unless i get a really great idea!)

Once again cheers for the comments.
