Death Korps of Krieg WIP Project Log

My first post on CMON; Hi all!

So, before I begin, a little about myself; I\'m a 22 year old from England, and I have dipped in and out of 40k and tamiya ww2 stuff for about 4 years. The past three months or so have been my longest stint of actually sitting down more than once a week and painting some mini\'s up. I currently have an unfinished Ultramarines army worth about 1000 points, but most of it is painted and I want to get a DKK army. However if you wish to reply on this thread it would probably do me best to treat me as a noob as my painting skills, imo, are only just up to a decent \"gaming\" standard. I wish this progress thread to be a record of my skills developing as my army grows, so all critique is welcome with arms wide open :)

So, where to start? Any DKK collectors reading your input would be greatly appreciated on colour schemes, theatres, fluff - especially fluff etc, and for now, I\'m starting on tanks. I have so far two Leman Russ\'s and a chimera. However I may dump the chimera in favour of some centaurs. I do intend to have a go at some conversions also, so fluff related or not, ideas for conversions are welcome.

I intend firstly to build up armour, and definately wish to include rough riders in my army list (which also, I am open to suggestions on).

I\'m trying to sort out hosting atm but for now I\'ve had to use the cmon site. further guidance would be appreciated. Sorry for the image quality I have misplaced the USB cable for my camera atm so had to use my N95..

So, in conclusion, I intend this thread to be progression for you all to witness but also for others to get involved and hopefully influence my army and the list. More pictures to follow; I generally paint at a reasonable pace; to get as far as I did with that russ, from primed took me roughly 2 hours, and at the moment I am setting aside between three and four hours about 5 or 6 days a week. my budget is about £250 (plus the gf said she\'d buy me some goodies for christmas), so I aim to have the army completed for january

Thanks to one and all

Cheers mate as I said I have decent photos on my camera but had no cable to load onto the pc. So had to use my phone camera, which isnt ideal. As soon as I find it better pics will be put up. I\'ve sorted hosting out now so no need to use the clicky in my first post

That looks like a great place to start! The weathering/rust is much more than most beginners would try. The main thing you need to do now is identify and accent colors youw ant to use on the model in addition to the metallics that surely are to come.

Red, brown, black and grey are probably the most likely suspects for a Krieg army\'s accent colors. Keeping red to a minimum (ie. for bades, with more liberal use on tanks and officers) is a good idea I think. They should be a rather drab and realistic looking army to do the models justice.

Look at the Vostroyan tanks from the City of Death book and/or that section of the GW webpage. They have a tasteful use of dark red in their tanks.

When it comes to army lists, I estimate that you\'ll probably be spending about 500 points minimum on troops (2 platoons of 25 each with a smattering of upgrades). This leaves approximately 150 pts for HQ, less if you don\'t care about a Commissar at this stage. Rough Riders are dirt cheap, a squad of 6 with lances comes in under 75 points. That leaves 275 pts for tanks, which is more than enough for a fully equipped Russ or Demolisher. You might even have the points to include a second tank or a couple heavy weapon squads to accompany the HQ. The tanks are obviously easier on the wallet. They won\'t get you nearly as much anti-armor capability though.

It can be tough to fit everything in a 1000 pt IG army because the troops cost at least half your points if you give them any respectable gear. Good luck with the project, I hope it goes well :D I\'m actually considering a similar project for the far flung future, one that revolves around buying the Gorgon Infantry Squads (50 DKK for 48 quid!!!) and finding creative ways of basing them for filling up troops squads lol

Damnit just wrote a long response only to find out I wasn\'t logged in so have to write it out again now..

Anyway thanks for the input Jericho, some useful advice - quick question - whats accent colours?

I had a rough list in mind along the lines of:

HQ: Commissar/JO/Quartermaster etc

3-4 Centaurs with grenadiers (not sure how many they each carry though?)
3-4 Leman Russ\'
24-30 Rough Riders
Heavy Artillery of some sort
Troops to be added over time

I know that list goes well over my budget but its all gradual, I intend to have a field-able army by January. Do you have any critique on that list

Obviously I\'m still in the planning stages but hope to have some idea or direction by the end of the week so I can put an order in with FW. First Units to buy?

BTW Jericho could you recommend some nice parts of Canada? I\'m due to emmigrate there in a couple of years; and whats the situation for plumbers/heating engineers over there? Similar to UK(hopefully :D)?

Cheers

I\'ve decided i don\'t like the colour scheme of this tank, but I looked at the VFB tank colours, a sort of rotting flesh based colour, and rather like the look of it. I\'ve taken the plunge in any case, and ordered some grenadiers and a commissar from FW. I\'ll post pics when I receive them
