decorating a wooden base

I bought a wooden base yesterday, to put a vehicle on it. But I\'m not sure when to glue and paint the basing material on it. Because I want to put some colored wood-varnish on the base, painting the sand I will glue on it could result in over-paint on the varnished edges of the wooden base.

Is there anyone who has any experience on this subject?

Hey Corvus,
this is how I would go about it, I\'m assuming the vehicle is ready for mounting
1. decide on location of vehicle, placing pins as required
2.build & decorate base as you would normally. Leave to dry completely as the next few stages will be making a bit of dust which you will need to be able to either brush or blow from the scenic part
3.starting with 180 grit, rub in the SAME direction as the grain to remove any overpainting glue etc
4.with a damp NOT dripping sponge or cloth wipe off the area you just sanded, leave to dry (about 10-20 mins should be ok) once dry it should look & feel furry
dont worry this is normal, what you are doing is \"raising the grain\" if you didn\'t do this with the water, the varnish would
5.repeat with 220
6.repeat with 320 \'ish
7.repeat with 400 (if you feel it needs it)
8.apply varnish, lightly sanding with 600 between coats, it should come up like glass
Alternatively you coul do the sanding up to the 220 then give it a light varnish (diluted 50/50) leave to dry 24-48 hrs, a light rub down with 220 again. Do your basing, carry on with sanding/varnishing

Corvus, I would stain the whole base and varnish the parts you don\'t want glue to stick to.

I would be very leary of gluing grass, etc. on first as any glue in the wood grain means that stain won\'t stain.

Mick has the sanding regimine down pat though.

I\'ve read CJ\'s article (which is great by the way) but I didn\'t find it very helpful for my specific question. I think I\'m going to try what Mick suggests here.

There are different ways to stain and seal wood, and really, it depends on the product you are using. My suggestion would be to do your stain and seal before you complete the dioramic aspect of the base itself. Once you have the stain and sealer on the wood, then I would wait 24-48 hours for it to cure and then tape it off with painters tape (the blue stuff is the best, but green will do). Once you have it taped off, do up the grass or other dioramic bits as you see fit.

This way you don\'t run the risk of damaging your scenic bits with stain, and you don\'t get a chance to muck up the bare wood with glue or paint.

Strange that you ask We got in 3 products today that will help you with your wood base. They are now listed in the CMON shop under Pegaso models - panoplies. These are made out of metal and you can afix them onto your base and paint them to your liking. The casting quality on them are fantastic...
