I like were you are heading, it gaves him a little hint of robin hood ;)
The last pic it's an Angus McBride illustration, he illustrated a lot of the Middle Earth Roleplaying covers, and gave live to LOTR characters long time ago. I love some of his work which has a special aura. Check for the Galadriel drawing that ussually acompains this one.
Well with your permission I put them here for you to see xP

Nice start Ben.
your plan is one untouched. Most stick to the films as reference but why not go different ? Strider / Aragorn lived his life in the wild, he had the ability to almost disappear, such was his renown. Now it's a question of do you capture this for the sake of accurate reference or take a different road.
As you wish to do freehand then for me, the only option is the brighter look you want.
Study some pictures of John How, he was Tolkeins illustrator. A superb artist. I would look toward pictures of Rivendell. Young Aragorn grew up there, seeking refuge with his mother. Failing that the White City of Minas Tirith but I would opt for Rivendel as your freehand inspiration.

Oh his stuff is fantastic, but I don't know how I can incorporate it into the cloak. I was thinking more of like a stylized camouflage pattern. I guess I could also do the White Tree of Gondor on there, but I might just do a border. Maybe I could incorporate the 7 stars? More pics soon.

Nice job on the Hunters, I love those models! Would love to see you tackle Tolkien freehand, I love the lines in that illustration. Seems like you've got some good textures going on Aragorn.

Thanks Sionid! I was really tempted to go "full texture" like you have done on some stuff, but I was a little scared. I want to have this done for a local comp on the 17th and trying out new things seems a little intimidating. The Hunters were sweet but in retrospect I think I would go with the metal figs. The resin looks more like 3d prints than casts and they have this weird sintered texture, especially around their shoulders.

Here is a little progress shot on Aragorn: the close-up has some harsh light but gives you a good idea of where I am at with the face. I need to get in there and do a little cleaning and fix up the dark shadows. I also wouldn't mind tweaking his eyes a little bit but I am going to need a steady hand or a microscope. You can see the only green left is on cloak although if you look closely you can still see it on his coat and boots.

I thought it was Andrea but wasn't sure. He's coming a long very well, like the colour palette a lot. Wouldn't change a thing on the eyes, they look perfect to me. Two tips which may make eyepainting a bit easier int the fututre. Eyes are about the only thing I paint in oils. As these dry very, very slow there's no need to rush versus the rapid drying acrylics. I also paint these with an old airbrush needle. I prefer this to an oridinairy needle as it is longer and thus can rest on the back of your hand and gives less shaking. If you are a right handed painter it's also easier to paint the figure'd right eye first. This way your hand won't block the view of the first eye while painting the second which makes it easier to place them both at the same angle.

Keep up the great work,

Gino(2dope)

Well the comp was canceled that I had planned to enter Aragon into so now he is languishing in the unfinished section of the display cabinet.

I have been very busy with commission painting. Here are couple of highlights:

I am enjoying this project. The silver Tower box is really fun, mostly good sculpts with a very classic warhammer feel, but really intricate casting and assembly. Very cool.

And this guy is an INCREDIBLE sculpt. The owner is going to use him for gaming so it was a quick PJ, about 3 hours, but man I could have spent another 10 on him. So much detail and everything was super crisp.

And these guys.

I cast resin parts so I could magnetize all the guns, these three guys took me closer to 40 hours. I'm pretty proud of the trench base. I hope everyone is having a nice time painting!

Sweet, looks like you've been busy! The silver tower guy looks great. And yeah, the trench base is awesome!

Thanks dude! I have been super busy, but I am trying to strike a balance with time management. Turns out locking myself in the paint room for a week doesn't go over to well with the wife :)

Yeah, you tend to get the look when you stumble out late at night...

Love those commissions you shared a few days ago. Sorcerer looks great, and the trench is a great idea which you've executed wonderfully.
