Demihuman's Rusty Ork Nobz

So this is what I am working on right now. I did a salt resist to get some really gritty yellow texture over a rusty metal base. Right now I am trying to shade the yellow to make it pop more and give it some depth. I am using reaper MS paints as that is what I have.

Right now i am just focusing on a dark brown - brown - rust/orange - orange - marigold - yellow - light (sun) yellow - lemon blend to get the yellow to not look so flat.

This is what i started with today:

And this is where I got to:

I had to mess with the exposure on the picture to show the gradation. My camera really isn't picking up the orange very well. Probably because all of my lights yellow

What do you guys think? The next thing on my list is to back in and do the esposed metal bits. For taht i will use GW metallics and some various washes.

Then I need to finalize the skin. I am pretty close but I need to get it a little more oily/wet looking. plus I want to do some tattoos and veins maybe scars or acne?

I believe that you have gotten quite close to your objective witht he colours, I might have used some mascal to get the effect of some peeled paint also.

One other thing that i would try to change is to make the lips a little bit more clear useing "purple" that you already have started with, but in a bigger area and lighter vertival streaks of lighter colour on them to give more character to the face.

Thanks Kretcher. I haven't had that much luck with the mask-all. I think i have the windsor and newton stuff and it's dang hard to get it all off especially the really small spots. The salt built up a lot of texture and I was really happy with it but now I need to go back in and re-do the dark metal/rust spots. I also feel like I might have bitten off more then I can chew. The rusty stuff looks good like in that real dark picture of the dude's back but then everything else is sort of going smooth and cartoonish.

The faces definitly need some more work. I want to highlight up to yellow - skin and pink-mouth and pig-nose with a real 'natural' blend to the pink in the lips and gums.

I'll try and post some progress tonight.

Ok here is a little progress. Haven't been around on the weekends so I haven't gotten a ton done but I am really happy with the way the face and mouth are turning out. Still working on getting the rusty yellow just right

Really struggling with those lenses. I think they look passable but not quite there. Plus these photos are a little flat.

you have to be careful when painting the nose & mouth of the green men with red/pink/violet colours, one glace too much and they suddenly turn from badass evul monsters to angry transvestite clowns. remember less is more there, imo its a bit too much at this ork.

i dig the weathering and torn effect on the yellow! :good:

Skellets your the man!

Yeah i need to probably bring it way down and then build it back up again so the colors are little more rooted. Also I need to get some more red in the mouth parts so it doesn't look so lavender. I have to take a better picture too. This guy looks GREAT at arms length.

I am really enjoying how cartoony the Orks are. It seems to lend itself to more over-the-top painting. Which is great for me. I think I tend to get stuck in 'realism' and then everything turns out flat and muted brown and gray.

Maybe I should green stuff up some dresses for them - hahaha. They could be the ... Booming Daelz? heh, I kill me.

I disagree with skellets. I think that the mouth is spot-on. I can fully see where you are going with it. Of course, it can be overdone, just like Skel states, but I wouldn't say that this miniature is there. Just my 2 cents worth of thoughts.

Hey, thanks Grefven!

I did a little more work on the face and the lenses. I also added a little light yellow to the 'teef'. I put a couple of white dots on his gums ('gumz'?) on the right lower jaw to try to get a wet look but I think need to give them a light wash of pink so they don't seem to float so much

This is a good shot of the shoulders. My camera isn't picking up some of the oranges and orange/browns in this pic but you get the idea

Nice work Demihuman :good: There are areas where it looks as though the paint has got pretty thick but the end result is good. Assuming that you have a squad to paint, I'm sure the next one will achieve the same result without the intermediate experimental steps :) Nothing wrong with using thinned gloss varnish on gums/eyes & the like for that wet effect. I think Andrew Taylor uses the technique to good effect on his Otherworld work...

Thanks BPI. The Roper and Neo-Otyaugh so cool. I love the old school stuff.

You said thinned gloss varnish right? Hmm I am little scared of the gloss varnish but maybe thinned it will be easier to control the effect. I am going to have to find a good spot to test it. That might be the answer though. The paint did get thick on the lenses and some other spots. But I am happy with the colors.

On the yellow armor I am going for built-up paint for texture which worked but then going back and shading is a big pain.

I use GW gloss varnish ('Ardcoat?) & Vallejo Model Colour matt varnish. Both are water based, so no issue with thinning. :) B.

I played around with some varnish last night. Matt and gloss. I think that is def. going in the mouths it does darken the colors quite a bit. I have the reaper varnish
