Hi all!!

Ok, having been away a couple of weeks (much needed holiday) I\'ve finally had a chance to take a few ok piccies of my three GDUK entries.

This first one is my Slanesh Demonette assassin which took a silver in 40K single (much to my utter amazement).

Whilst I generally dislike posting the same mini more than once, I couldn\'t get a nice close-up AND the multiple views she deserved in one post, so she\'s in two... they are:

And

(close-up)

As always constructive comments are always welcome....

There were bits of this model I was SO happy with, others I thought really let it down... but overall, I can\'t complain with a demon in this category on just my third try :)

Cheers all!!!

some real injustice going on with the photography here..I\'m legendarily crap but I would suggest more light needed and maybe only one sot of the model and plinth.. hosting through PB as well allows bigger than the CMON file size..
I Love the pastel like colours used on this model and the smooth blends . really great work Ben now get some decent piccies of her as sh eserves

Lovely bit of smooth painting. This mini shows that you don\'t have to do wild sculpting and conversions to achieve a demon.
Well done Ben, deserved silver.

Yeah, great mini... utter pants photography.

More light, higher f and if you can\'t up to f/22 or similar, the eyes should always be in focus.

saw this on the day though and well nice it is.

Ok, gonna take the pics down and put new ones up...

The eyes WERE in focus, dunno what\'s happened if they look like they\'re not :)

It was photographed with two spot lights and with a dirty great pro flash gun attached to the Eos... I think I\'m gonna have to get a light tent or something.

Will try again.

Looks like just above the (her) right knee is the point of focus... maybe just a fewmm out but enough to present it less than perfect (which is a shame on a mini this nice!).

If your background has a creamy colour to it naturally, try to have a background in the grey scales to set the colour temp properly as the creamy colours will push that out a bit if you\'re metering on the whole scene.

I think it\'s bright enough and your lighting is good enough but it needs more depth of field.

I\'m looking forward to seeing the pics because, as I say, it was v.nice on the day.

Ok... they\'re gone.

Spent an hour re-photographing her last night with no real improvement as I can\'t get the depth of field without using the flash and with the flash I get a harsh shadow that is impossible to remove in Photoshop...

Having another go this morning... sooner or later I\'ll have one decent photograph of this godddamn mini.

Apologies to those who voted and left comments, I\'ll post back when she\'s up again.

Ok, what do you think of this new montage.... is this good-enough? I really do need to get a better studio set-up, it makes a mockery of the £1500 worth of digital SLR, lense and flash I\'m using to take these pics on a badly lit chair with a sheet of paper as a backdrop :)

And howsabout this for a close-up pic?

At least I managed F18 on this so even with the 250mm lens a good 8mm - 10mm of her is in focus.

I\'ll await comments before posting them again.

I\'ve spent the last hour and a half messing with the colour balance and contrast on these pics to try and get it right and I\'m still not happy with them.

At least I\'ve solved the shadow problem now and have a clear background (moved her further away from the background and put a second difuser on the flash) but the colours and contrast still look shite.

Ah well, for now this may have to do!

Oh Dear...

I have a 200 EURO cam from Sony and I managed to take the pics of my Marine, I guess it is a lot about really knowing your Gear...

I have worked a bit on your Pic with Photoshop, maybe you like it better...

If you make only SHARP pics, I would like to PS them as well, if you like in the Raw version (just send me the original size pics...)... If you are interested: PM me, please...

Feel free to use it (of course...:)...)...

Edit: Here´s the second...

You need to make sharper pictures, that´s nearly all (besides the WHITE Daylight...)... Color, Contrast, Balance... this can all be done to a certain point...

Hi Ben....

congrats on the demon for this...looks superb!

If I remember correctly you\'ve a Canon 20D like me.......?

are you shooting in full manual mode?

The Colour balance is off, Matt\'s corrected it well but you should be able to sort that out up front.

can you edit RAW files at home?

maybe you could send the original jpeg to me and I can check the EXIF data and see what settings you\'re using

with that cam you should be able to get better pics straight out of the camera

Cheers Matt and Rob....

You wouldn\'t think I\'d worked in professional photography and graphics (including photo editing) for eight years would you :)

I will bring up the excuse that the Eos seems to be on it\'s way out (keeps doing very strange things and randomly locking up for no good reason) and that I have a new monitor which I\'m not sure if it\'s set up right yet... but otherwise I have NO excuse for the pics being shite.

Matt, those pics are a bit better... perhaps a little harsher than I was aiming for, but better than mine :)

I\'ve only been shooting in jpg, not .raw, and yes, in fully manual.

May have another play with them and see if I can get any better results.

I think it probably doesn\'t help that the camera is set (colour wise) for flash but the mini is also lit by a daylight bulb plus two standard fillament bulbs, so that\'s probably throwing the colour off a bit.

Anyway, thanks again guys... will keep playing.

Is the sheet of paper in the background white?

Ok, had another go, this time changed the lighting settings around until it was recreating fairly accurate colours from the start.... here\'s an only slightly tweaked version of one of the pics...

Are we getting there yet?!

Yes, it\'s a pure white sheet opf cartridge paper... well, as pure white as cartridge paper gets. Looking at it next to some layout paper (which is VERY white) it has a very feint beige tint to it, but only very slight.

Best photo so far. I would suggest you try with a non-white background as well, something like light grey or light blue. I find that colours and contrast are captured better if the background isn\'t stark white.

Ok, off out to my local GW anyway, gonna pop into the nearby art shop and pick up some big sheets of coloured paper while I\'m there.

Will do a final set of pics this afternoon and get them up.

Thanks all :)
