Desaturated Highlights

Would using Codex Grey be a good way to desaturate a highlight? For instance if I base coated a skin with tanned flesh and wanted to use elf flesh as the highlight but did not want it to be so intense would just adding codex grey make the elf flesh less saturated? Or is there another color that would work better for lighter colors? Thanks.

I would use a lighter grey than Codex, and I would use one that is more blueish to compensate for the peachy tone of the Elf Flesh.

Yep, using a light grey to lighten is one of the best ways of getting desaturated highlights. If the result\'s too dull, try grey+white.

So to help desaturate a color it is good to use greys that have a bit of an opposing color to the color it is being mixed with? Or an opposing temperature meaning a cool grey to mix with a warm color and vise versa?

Mixing a colour with a complementary colour will desaturate it (at least in theory). I don\'t think colour temperature affects its saturation, though.

space wolves grey is a good one for desaturating flesh highlights.
not quite grey yet not blue either so you don\'t get the cool tone.
